Job summary
An exciting opportunity to work as a Speciality Doctor in Chemical Pathology within Derbyshire Pathology at Queens Hospital Burton (main site), to commence as soon as possible.
To provide clinical services to Derbyshire and Staffordshire and surrounding areas, with colleagues and to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients at the hospitals & clinics at which you have duties and the proper functioning of the department.
To provide continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed and teaching of staff in training, and the multidisciplinary team.
Maintaining flexible arrangements for emergency cover and a provision of cover for colleagues during reasonable periods of leave.
Active participation in undergraduate & post graduate education, including training sessions for resident doctors, medical students and other healthcare staff in the specialty.
Assist in the supervision & training of medical staff/students, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.
Participate in clinical governance activity under local arrangements
Main duties of the job
Responsible for provision of outpatient clinics in metabolic medicine, particularly for lipid disorders.
There are currently 5 outpatient sessions per week at Queens Hospital Burton, mainly for patients with lipid disorders (90%) and for other patients with a range of metabolic disorders. The lipid clinic is the hospital main prescriber of PCSK9 inhibitors and provides Inclisarin for some patients, while this is being fully implemented in East Staffordshire Primary Care. Lipid clinics are provided in Royal Derby Hospital by a multidisciplinary team including Consultant Endocrinologist and Advanced Pharmacist and in Chesterfield Royal Hospital by Consultant Physician. It is envisaged the appointee will provide the Lipid Clinics on the QHB, support the management of patients requiring Inclisarin to be provided in primary care, so providing capacity to lead a multidisciplinary team to provide an equitable service across Derbyshire and East Staffordshire for patients with lipid disorders. Further development of the metabolic medicine clinic will be encouraged, dependent on the interests of the appointee.
Responsible with consultant clinical scientist colleagues for providing a comprehensive diagnostic and clinical biochemistry laboratory service.
The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice.
