Job summary
We are looking for a speciality doctor to join our current team of medical and biomedical scientist staff with a primary aim to aid in specimen dissection. Dissection will include a wide range of specimens but will be predominantly focused on an immediate need to assist in breast dissection.
The Cellular Pathology Department is based on the site of Royal Derby Hospital. This is a very busy UKAS accredited department with an interesting, varied and growing workload, covering most specialities except medical renal biopsies, neuropathology and paediatric/neonatal pathology.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a speciality doctor to join our current team of medical and biomedical scientist staff with a primary aim to aid in specimen dissection. Dissection will include a wide range of specimens but will be predominantly focused on an immediate need to assist in breast dissection.
Discussions surrounding short and long term educational needs will be welcomed alongside the departmental service needs. A mentor will be provided for support and there will be opportunity to support consultants in reporting histopathology specimens as well as participating and attending multidisciplinary team meetings.
The current cellular pathology service aspires to provide an integrated service contributing to all aspects of diagnosis, screening and monitoring of disease. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an enthusiastic and expanding team keen to deliver a modern clinically orientated service. The appointee will work closely with other service providers such as the Biomedical Scientists and administration staff in the day-to-day provision of an efficient and effective Cellular Pathology service at UHDB NHS Foundation Trust.
The employee will assist with the responsibility for use and security of the Trusts assets, including their own use, and ensuring correct use by others.
You will also be expected to support business planning including introduction of new methods, assist with Policy and SOP preparation.
There are a number of regular departmental meetings that oversee the various aspects of laboratory where attendance may be required. The appointee will take an active role in matters of Clinical Governance including audit and training that relate to the laboratory and clinical activities of the Cellular Pathology Department.
Service Development Activities
The Trust provides an induction course for all new employees (including SAS doctors), attendance at which is mandatory.
Revalidation
As part of the process of revalidation the post holder will be expected to comply with the annual appraisal processes which are established in the Trust.
This will include a requirement to collect feedback information, to quality assurance/improvement and maintain CPD in line with GMC Good Medical Practice.
Research
Research is not a requirement of the post but there are facilities to undertake research and the hospital has several active research groups operating in different areas.
The Trust comprises research-active Teaching Hospitals with a developing culture of research and innovation across the whole organisation. All clinicians are expected to engage in research, development & innovation according to their subspecialty interests.
Engagement of clinical staff in research covers a spectrum of involvement, ranging from awareness of the studies and trials taking place in their areas, to assisting with the identification of research participants, to those who win research funding and assume the role of Chief Investigator for multi- centre trials and studies.
Staff who wish to undertake research require the approval of the Trust R&I Department and relevant ethical approval, and must adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance.

All members of staff have a responsibility to abide by all clinical governance policies, practices and codes provided by the Trust and have an equal responsibility with management for developing and maintaining appropriate systems and practice for maintaining safe working practices. - Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent from GMC approved university
- Full registration (with a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- FRCPath- part 1 in Cellular Pathology
- Eligible to reside & work in the UK
- Knowledge and understanding of the CPD scheme of the Royal College of Pathologists (or equivalent)
