Job summary

The Specialist Medicine Therapy team at Royal Derby Hospital are recruiting for a full time, static Band 5 Occupational Therapist post. A desire to learn, develop and progress in a supportive team is essential.

The post holder will be joining an established, vibrant and friendly team of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and assistant staff who share an office base and work closely together to provide a consistent and responsive Therapy service to the Acute Medicine and Respiratory wards.

You will gain clinical skills and knowledge working with a variety of patients, which include Renal, Endocrinology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Cardiology, providing Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment, and providing advice and support to other professionals throughout the Trust.

You will be required to carry a caseload independently and effectively delegate to assistant staff as appropriateto ensure priorities across the service are covered. You must also be adaptable, calm and forward thinking.

Main duties of the job

Excellent problem-solving skills are a must, to ensure holistic and patient centred quality care.

Experience in facilitating discharges in a fast-paced acute hospital environment is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively as part of multi-disciplinary and therapy team. This will involve working closely with other OTs and Physiotherapists to ensure optimum service delivery and delay avoidance.

  • Provide a high standard Occupational Therapy service to the acute medicine wards
  • Joint working with Physiotherapy
  • Formulate individual treatment plans with patients with diverse presentations and complex conditions
  • Responsible for own caseload demonstrating prioritisation and delegation skills alongside excellent team working
  • Initiation of and involvement in service improvement projects, clinical and team audit
  • Effective and timely discharge planning working within an MDT
  • Supervise and support assistants
  • Supervise and educate students
  • Maintain and develop strong communication links with community services
