Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine

Job summary

Whole time appointment with a work commitment of 10 PAs (i.e. 40 hours) for the standard working week. Any programmed activities over and above 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) will be paid as Additional Programmed Activities in line with Schedule 7 of the Terms and Conditions of Service for Specialty Doctors - England (2008). Currently this post attracts an additional 2 PAs per week.)

The postholder is expected to undertake a work commitment of no more than an average of 48 hours per week, in line with EWTD legislation.

The Specialty Doctor would: -

  • Be expected to participate in the day-to-day provision of emergency medical care to patients in the Emergency Department and participate in the management of all patients who have been involved in major trauma or who have life threatening illnesses.
  • Work in the Emergency Department Review Clinic when required to do so.
  • Supervise the work of the STs and ENPs, participating fully in their training as required and appropriate.
  • Participate in the day-to-day work of the Department at a middle grade level under the direction of the Consultant responsible.

Main duties of the job

The post is based on a Specialty Doctor Contract at 10 PAs, with allocation of PAs based on the national standard of 9 PAs for Direct Clinical Care,1 PA for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) and an additional 2 PAs are paid in accordance with the working pattern.

Clinical duties will include taking a lead role in the management of acutely ill and trauma patients. The qualities of leadership required as head of an emergency team are stressed and it is anticipated that these qualities will be gradually learned through the process of supervision of more junior doctors and involvement in their education, both formal and informal.

The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice.

The post holder is expected to commit to ongoing personal development and to show a commitment to maintaining and developing skills and professional knowledge relevant to the post, and to develop a portfolio of evidence. Also to participate and fully engage in the process of appraisal, including 360 degree appraisal, and the development of a Personal Development Plan (PDP) including personal objectives.
