Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced HCPC registered Occupational Therapist to join our expert and friendly team of OTs, Driving Instructors and Administration staff on a permanent basis. The Centre is accredited by Driving Mobility and funded principally by the Department for Transport whilst being within the NHS framework.
Our specialist service primarily assesses medical fitness to drive of people who will have a range of medical conditions; developing a working knowledge and understanding of the DVLA standards of medical fitness to drive is an essential and integral part of the role. We also assist in enabling passengers and their carers to find suitable solutions to their needs.You will work either in in Derby or at one of our outreach services - currently in Stoke and Newark. You must hold a valid driver's licence as driving to these venues ( approximately 3-4 times a month) is essential as part of the post holder's responsibilities.
You will be assessing on assessment drives car ( rear seat) with the driving instructor and you will make recommendations not only on fitness to drive but also, when appropriate, on adaptations.
Main duties of the job
We require you to have a robust working knowledge of a range of medical conditions and experience of cognitive testing. You will be expected to observe the majority of in car assessment drives and use your clinical and assessment skills to make recommendations not only on fitness to drive but also, as appropriate, on suitable adaptations.You will need excellent communication, decision making, report writing skills, interpersonal skills, flexibility and prioritisation skills for managing your own case load whilst considering the needs of the team and the service. It is expected that you will have compassion, empathy and be able to adhere to the trust's ethos and values.
Using computer systems including an electronic diary are integral to the role. Detailed reports are written after every assessment and you will need an excellent ability to proof read reports.
You will be given the necessary training to develop your knowledge and skills and you will be expected to take an active role in your own CPD which will include regular supervision. It is a requirement of our centre accreditation that all new assessment staff will complete the external training programme run by the Oxford Brooks University. This would probably take place in year 2 of the post and incorporates 3 residential study periods and assignments. All costs for this are covered by the Service.
