Job summary

To promote the safe and efficient use of blood and blood components through education,training and audit in clinical transfusion practice.

Take responsibility for the delivery of specialist practice in relation to Blood Transfusion across the Trust in a patient centred clinically effective way in line with Trust policies, procedures and national guidelines.

Take the lead in the development of best clinical practice in the specialist area of Blood Transfusion, providing information and support to patients undergoing Blood Transfusion.

Provide support and advice to all staff involved in the transfusion process throughout the Trust and healthcare workers across the community.

Influence the use of blood by promoting alternative therapies and enhancing the safe use of blood and blood components in line with the National Patient Blood Management initiatives.

To act as an interface between the Blood Transfusion Department and its clinicalusers.

To ensure compliance with all applicable standards and guidelines.

Main duties of the job

To ensure blood transfusion standards are met or exceed.

Acts as the lead specialist in the development, training and competency of all relevant clinical and non-clinical staff in the use of blood components and products, in the compliance with Clinical Governance requirements and to formulate training packages for use throughout.

Take a lead role in managing the use of blood components and products in clinical areas reducing wastage and to influence the need to change practice where appropriate, by predicting and monitoring the use of blood and blood components.

Be an active member of the Hospital Transfusion Committee and the Hospital Transfusion Team, applying national guidelines and legal requirements of BSQR 2005 to the benefit of the trust and influencing the decision-making process regarding transfusion alternatives.

Investigates transfusion related incidents and report externally to the Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) and MHRA on behalf of the Trust when Applicable. Report via the Trust incident reporting system and to the Hospital Transfusion Team, Hospital Transfusion Committee and Patient Safety Group.

Develop, influence, monitor and review the Trust's Transfusion Policy and Clinical Guidelines and ensure that all staff have access to the document.

Participate, promote and facilitate audit.

Continuously assess, monitor and mitigate risk in transfusion practice.
