Hand Therapist - Accelerator

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for full or part-time therapists (Occupational or Physiotherapists) to join a large dedicated and experienced Hand Therapy Team.

The vacancies are Band 6, but we would consider a Band 5-6 accelerator / training post for those that are interested and passionate about hand therapy, and possess transferable skills, but have not had the opportunity to work in hands.

The B5-6 accelerator post would involve starting the post as a Band 5 and participating in a competency-based training programme. Once competencies have been successfully completed then there would be progression to the Band 6 .

The team works collaboratively within the Hand Unit, which currently has 10 hand consultants, 3 Nurse Practitioners and 2 Hand Therapy Practitioners.As a Unit we are committed to promote learning and development, we run and present on BAHT level 1 and 2 accredited courses. We support members of the team to attend relevant external courses.

The post will require post qualification experience in an acute NHS hospital, of which some experience in MSK or upper limb work is essential. It is helpful to have a good knowledge of upper limb & hand anatomy, physiology and basic hand conditions and also skills in hand assessment and treatment techniques.

Main duties of the job

The Therapists in the team work very generically. We see a variety of trauma and elective patients and use a range of therapeutic techniques including thermoplastic and off the shelf splints, pressure garments, exercises, Primus work simulator and MULE. Services are provided to inpatients and outpatients, on an individual and group basis.

There will be an induction period, regular supervision and relevant training offered to assist in their development. It is a fast-paced environment and so it will be necessary to have good prioritisation, delegation and time management skills. It will also be necessary to work flexibly.

Independently manage your own caseload, plan & prioritise patient care.

Provide assessment and treatment to a variety of hand conditions, acute, traumatic, post op and degenerative.

To use face to face (1:1 and groups), video and phone appointment methods and document electronically.

Supervise students / band 5 as required.

Support service development.

Work with Orthopaedics, Nurses, Hand surgeons (Orthopaedic and Plastics) Hand Therapy team and Administration.

Independently manage your own caseload, plan & prioritise patient care.
