Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and caring Clinical Technologist/Nuclear Medicine Radiographer to join our team of Clinical Technologists, Associate Technologists and Clinical Scientists to participate in the full range of nuclear medicine practice within the department. This is a great opportunity to develop your practice skills in a friendly, busy department that covers a broad scope of nuclear medicine procedures.
The Nuclear Medicine Service sits with the Imaging Business Unit at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton and is progressive and friendly. It provides a full range of diagnostic imaging and non-imaging studies along with a number of molecular radiotherapy treatments. The department has modern facilities with three gamma cameras, two with SPECT-CT, and its own dedicated Radiopharmacy manufacturing unit. There are also plans to install a new gamma camera with diagnostic CT capacity in the next 12 months.

Main duties of the job
You will be expected to participate in all aspects of the department's diagnostic imaging and non-imaging work with adult and paediatric patients including all methods of radiopharmaceutical administration, image acquisition and image processing. You will also work within the Radiopharmacy and be involved in both the manufacture and dispensing of Radiopharmaceuticals and also blood cell labelling. You will perform routine equipment quality control.

Job responsibilities
Perform routine nuclear medicine diagnostic tests (in-vivo and in-vitro) on adult and paediatric patients in a safe, efficient and caring manner, so supporting the clinical activity associated with approximately 7000 patient referrals each year and the manufacture and drawing up of approximately 10000 radiopharmaceutical doses.
Main duties include:
Undertake all diagnostic nuclear medicine investigations (paediatric, adult and invitro and in-vivo) including all methods of radiopharmaceutical administration, image acquisition, image processing, the authorisation of requests and the requesting of X-ray examinations.
Liaise with consultant and medical colleagues to ensure the appropriate test is performed, advising them on technical and patient safety issues.
Discuss potentially sensitive information with patients tactfully including risks and benefits of an investigation and obtain written and verbal informed consent.
Provide for patients personal care when necessary.
Follow radiopharmacy procedures and maintain good manufacturing practice (GMP) to ensure the safe production of radiopharmaceuticals.
Communicate patient observations and relevant patient clinical history to staff performing clinical reporting.
Act as an Operator under the IRMER regulations.
Assist with the supervision of junior and student clinical technologists.
Undertake and supervise radiation monitoring, ensure radioactive sources are secure at all times and radioactive waste is stored and disposed of in compliance with the relevant legislation.
Perform one or more of the following:
- Co-ordinate the booking of appointments.
- Undertake paediatric injections.
- Undertake white cell labelling.
- Undertake interstitial injections prior to sentinel node biopsy
- Supervise junior staff within the radiopharmacy
- Act as a Radioactive Waste Supervisor under the EPR regulations.
- Manage the patient image archive (PACS, Gamma Cameras etc.)
- Act as a coordinator for X-ray requesting
- Act as the clinical supervisor for trainee clinical technologists
- Organise staff mandatory training and maintain records
- Coordinate the day to day management of in-vitro procedures
Make decisions about the acceptable quality of acquired images, repeating and/oracquiring extra views if necessary.
Make decisions about referring patients for x-ray examinations following the review of acquired nuclear medicine images.
Make decisions about the acceptability of requests according to the practitioner authorisation guidelines.
