Job summary
The Dialysis Unit is a purpose built spacious unit, we have 55 stations altogether to allow for future growth, but currently we only have 48 stations open per shift. We operate on a 3 shift system per day for patients. Staff work 2x12hr, 1x6hr, 1x7.5hr shifts per week.
We are open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays. The early/late shift is 06.30-19.30, late/twilight shift is 11:30-00.30 and then we also do shorter shifts which will either be Early, late or twilight. You will be expected to do a variety of these shifts.
This role involves preparing and programming the dialysis machines and related equipment for dialysis sessions, and assisting the nurse with caring for a team of patients whilst on dialysis. You will be provided with the appropriate training to learn how to do this and there may be further opportunities to progress to Nurse Associate Training and, becoming part of the on call rota for the unit.
This is a demanding role involving both technical and caring aspects. On commencement of the post, support will be provided by a mentor (an experienced technician) and the Clinical Facilitators until you are deemed competent to work unsupervised.
The Clinical facilitators also provide continued support to allow you to develop your skills further. Your reliability in terms of attendance and timekeeping are essential.
Prior to the interview you should arrange an informal visit to the dialysis unit.
Main duties of the job
- Assist nursing staff in the treatment and care of patient
- Be able to perform routine dialysis treatments involving setting up machines, troubleshooting, putting on and taking off patients (without supervision after passing assessment), removing disposables at end of treatment, washing down machine post treatment and disinfecting as per protocol and setting up for subsequent treatments
- Monitor and carry out observations of the patient pre/post and during treatments, being aware of if the patient is becoming unwell on dialysis and inform senior staff immediately. Able to take appropriate actions to remedy the situation where trained to do so and implement emergency procedure
- Assist nursing staff when dealing with central venous catheters.
- Assist technical staff in the deployment and service of dialysis machines informing engineering technicians when faulty
- Select and prepare disposables required for all dialysis treatments
- Assist in general good housekeeping and stock keeping
- Always put patients needs first, ensuring their comfort and safety (i.e. ensuring machine alarms set, nurse call in easy reach etc)
- Give out food and drinks at appropriate times
