Theatres are recruiting colleagues to start a new Degree Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner programme in partnership with the University of Derby.

Main duties of the job

We are delighted to offer this apprenticeship to come and join us for a career in the operating theatre to become an ODP here at UHDB.

We are looking for motivated individuals interested in providing a high standard of care to patients within an operating theatre setting. UHDB theatres are working for patients as a 24 hour, 7 day service. Our Theatres operate over 4 sites and therefore there is the opportunity to work across sites.

The role of an ODP involves preparation of the patient ready for surgery assisting in the management of medicines, airways and anaesthetics, getting the operating theatre ready for surgery, scrubbing up with the surgeons to manage the procedure and instrumentation, and, management of the patients' recovery ready for discharge back to a ward.

UHDB, in partnership with the University of Derby, is offering an opportunity to undertake the BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice (ODP) as an apprenticeship. On successful completion of the training, you will access the Register (Health Care Professions Council) of ODPs ready for a Band 5 theatre practitioner contract with us.

The ODP apprenticeship combines clinical practice-based learning with degree academic study.

You will be paid a salary whilst you achieve the necessary skills to become an ODP.

Here are some of the clinical settings you will work and achieve competencies in:

  • Supporting all patients through the entire pathway from arrival into the theatre suite, and helping them during anaesthetics and surgery
  • Day case, in- patient, emergency and trauma care
  • Managing the preparation of the operating theatres and the care of patients undergoing their operation
  • Recovery of the patient once their surgery is complete

What will your learning pathway will look like?

The degree in Operating Department Practice will be over 3 years during which you will be supported to develop new skills and knowledge, though you will be allocated to theatres, you will also be given the opportunity to work in different areas in the hospitals to gain understanding of the patients journey from admission to going home.

All applicants must have:

  • 5 GSCEs (or equivalent) at grades A-C or 4-9, to include Mathematics and English
  • Apprentice and non-apprentice applicants required to have English and Maths L2 or for those with an education, health & care plan or a legacy statement, the English and Maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3
  • 112 UCAS points, or equivalent
  • Level 3 qualification in a Health and Social Care related course or equivalent qualification
  • Evidence of recent study
  • Ability to meet the occupational health requirements of the programme
