Senior Clinical Pharmacist – Innovation, Research and Development

Job summary

The Trust is looking for an organised and motivated individual to provide clinical and operational leadership within the Pharmacy Department's expanding research portfolio. A successful candidate will, with the support of the Lead Clinical Pharmacist for Research and Development, manage the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Team and oversee all clinical trial activity within the department.

There will be an expectation that a successful candidate will maintain a regular clinical commitment. The speciality where this clinical practise will be based will be agreed on appointment, taking into account the needs of the service and the successful candidate's preference.

Main duties of the job

Lead clinical research delivery involving medicines across the Trust.

Provide medicines and pharmacy advice to the wider research team.

Work with the Lead Clinical Pharmacist to ensure Good Clinical Practice and regulations governing the delivery of safe clinical research are adhered to across the Trust.

Responsible for managing the process of pharmacys input to clinical trials Trustwide, ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice for Clinical Trials within Pharmacy

Responsible for ensuring good governance arrangements between Pharmacy and Trusts R&D department, and providing specialist advice to the Trusts R&D department in ensuring Good Clinical Practice for the running of clinical trials.

Within assigned clinical specialty, to lead on matters pertaining to medicines management, to advise on medicines use (risk, clinical governance, research and development, formulary, expenditure) and to develop/audit relevant protocols and guidelines.

To ensure that there is compliance with medicines legislation particularly within own assigned area of responsibility and by assuming statutory professional responsibility whilst working in the dispensary.

To undertake risk management and clinical governance activities within own assigned areas of responsibility

To assist in the provision of expert advice on pharmaceutical matters and that pertaining to medicines management (particularly within own area of responsibility). Medicines Management encompasses the selection, purchasing, delivery, prescribing, administration and review of medicine to optimise the contribution they make to produce informed and desired outcomes of patient care.

To manage, support and/or teach when appropriate, less experienced staff e.g. junior pharmacists, trainee pharmacists, pharmacy students and other members of the healthcare team (e.g. resident doctors).

To participate in medical and other ward rounds as well as multi-disciplinary team meetings as appropriate.

To contribute to the running of Pharmacy by assuming responsibility for functional area(s) of the service e.g. designated supervisor/manager, out of hours service, roster management, medicines information, collation/reporting against clinical key performance indicators.

  • 1st degree - Vocational masters degree in pharmacy (4 years)
  • One year's pre-registration training
  • Registered with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Postgraduate clinical qualification (over and above that of the 1st degree, preferably at Masters level) and/or significant relevant clinical experience to demonstrate a similar level of knowledge
  • Independent prescribing qualification or commitment to achieving this on appointment
  • Evidence of continuing professional development to at least meet the mandatory requirements of the GPhC
  • IT skills to at least ECDL standard or equivalent experience
