Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Paediatrician (interest in Undergraduate Medical Education)

The closing date is 20 November 2025

Job summary

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint two permanent Consultant General Paediatricians. This is a full time post with acute duties based at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Hospital in Cramlington and clinics at Wansbeck, Hexham and North Tyneside General Hospitals.

The successful candidate will have expertise in General Paediatrics and will provide consultant cover for children in our paediatric emergency department, short stay children's ward and level 1 SCBU. Expertise and training in the management of injuries is not essential as the unit is supported by Emergency Care Consultants from the main Emergency Department next door.

The post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week which includes some on-site working in the evenings and at weekends. There is an overnight on call commitment of 1 in 9 nights but no overnight resident duties. It is possible that, with team agreement, this may change to a 1 in 8 rota in the future.

The post also includes an undergraduate medical education lead role, taking over the Local Education Provider (LEP) Lead for 3rd or 5th year undergraduate medical students from Newcastle University in Child Health at Northumbria, as well as contributing to teaching, assessment, and supervision within the faculty.

Please note we reserve the right to close this vacancy prior to the closing date once the required number of suitable applications have been received.

Main duties of the job

The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing of sessions may change as the service develops. Full and part time applications are welcome, and the content of the job will be agreed with individual candidates.

The Job Plan will typically include an average of 7.0 Programmed Activities for Direct Clinical Care duties, 1.4 Programmed Activities for undergraduate medical education, and 1.5 Programmed Activities for Supporting Professional Activities (if full time). As 2PAs are allocated for out of hours working there will be one non-working day each week.

The 1.4 PAs for undergraduate medical education will be funded from Newcastle medical school monies (SIFT monies) on a fixed term contract for 2 years, renewable subject to confirmation by the Director for Undergraduate Medical Education for this medical school.

A proposed job plan has been outlined in Appendix 4 and will be agreed on commencement of appointment.
