Job summary
Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management Ltd is seeking to recruit a Maintenance Assistant, working at Hexham General Hospital and other sites Trust-Wide as necessary within the needs of the service.
The successful post holder will be involved in the day to day operation and maintenance of all Building/Engineering, life and business-critical services, plant and equipment within all Trust and non-Trust properties within their remit, including some installation work. They will be part of a team of Maintenance Assistants carrying out planned and unplanned maintenance duties as directed by the Estates Officers. This role will have time dedicated to stores duties , ordering , receipting, stock taking and keeping inventory up to date to allow the smooth operation of the of the department store.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant(s) will already have M&E Building Services experience, in an Estates or similar environment. They must be versatile and be able to handle conflicting priorities with the ability to work under pressure. Prioritising workload according to service and business demand. They will be computer literate, have good technical knowledge and ability, with good verbal and written communication skills. They will also possess good interpersonal skills, allowing them to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical personnel, within and beyond the organisation.
They will be carrying out semi-skilled building and engineering jobs using own initiative, and undertaking unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work relevant to attained skills and training, including on domestic type appliances. Storeman duties will be done as part of this role.

Job responsibilities
- To manage and maintain stock control within main works stores, ordering and issuing parts where required.
- To carry out semi-skilled building and engineering jobs using own initiative.
- To undertake unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work relevant to attained skills and training.
- Where required provide on call key holder duties out of hours service for NHCT premises
- Successfully attain any courses relevant to the job including Advanced Driving, Scaffolding, Manual Handling, Confined Spaces, Conflict Resolution, Legionella awareness training and Fire Control.
- Essential to hold a City & Guilds or equivalent qualification in Basic
- Electrical/Mechanical/Plumbing, NVQ and PAT Testing qualifications.
- Maintenance of Domestic Appliances, patient hoists and beds.
- As and when required to carry out the duties of a storeman/groundsperson / maintenance assistant.
- Service/repair of mechanical/electrical patient hoists and electrical/mechanical beds.
- Where required provide on call key holder out of hours service for external clients.
- Undertake minor brickwork, piecing up and flag stone repairs.
- Refix ceiling and wall tiles, where damaged/make safe.
- Mix aggregates e.g. sand and cement and plaster.
- Salting and gritting (to be done in line with local written agreement with respective sites).
- Undertake Legionella testing, cleaning and chlorination of water tanks, ensuring that all relevant chlorine levels are attained and tanks are put back into use safely.
- Provide general clerical support in the form of photocopying, dispatch of departmental mail and record keeping.
- Assist mechanical, electrical and building trades as directed by Operations & Projects Officers, Supervisor/Chargehand.
- Maintain a register of on-site contractors and the issue of ID badges.
- Regularly work at heights e.g. ladders, scaffolding, cherry picker, genies etc.
- Frequently maintain and unblock sewage system.
- To undertake general labouring duties as required by Operations and Projects Officers.
