Job summary
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine - applications are welcomed from candidates interested in a part time or full-time role.
The posts will be trustwide with outpatient clinics across trust sites and rotation to provide consultant cover to the two acute respiratory wards at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH).
The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop sub-specialist interests to complement the other members of the department, and any sub-specialist interest can be considered. Sub-speciality clinics in cough, lung cancer, pleural disease, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, asthma and sleep medicine are currently provided within the Respiratory Department. The new post will be encouraged to either support current services or develop new sub-specialty interests, service development of services and pathways is welcomed and encouraged.
For applicants with an interest in Undergraduate Medical Education, there is also the opportunity to take on a dedicated teaching and education role as part of this post.

Main duties of the job
The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service, and the timing of sessions may change as the service grows and develops.
A typical week would consist of 10 Programmed Activities (PA's), including an allocation of 1.5 for Supported Professional Activities. Additional SPA's will be available dependent upon service need.

You will join a trustwide team of 14 Consultant Respiratory Physicians, 3 Specialist Trainees, 5 Respiratory Fellows alongside a large Team of Lung Cancer Nurse Specialists, Respiratory Specialist Nurses, Oxygen Nurses and Respiratory Physiologists working trustwide. We also have a large team of Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapists and Speech and & Language Therapists, alongside a Senior Respiratory Pharmacist.
The respiratory wards are currently supported by F1, F2, IMT Doctors in Training and SpR/ST/Respiratory Fellow Trainees. Trainee Advanced Care Practitioners also rotate through both Respiratory Wards.
The team provides specialist inpatient respiratory care on two 30 bedded wards at NSECH incorporating an 11 bedded respiratory support unit with a respiratory physician on site from 8am to 8pm 7 days a week and a respiratory on call service. Inpatient ward cover to a base site ward is shared with other General Medicine colleagues at Wansbeck General Hospital. You will share inpatient responsibilities on the ward with existing consultant colleagues. There will be office accommodation and secretarial support provided.
There are lung function laboratories at both Wansbeck General Hospital (WGH) and North Tyneside General Hospital (NTGH) sites and a service supporting outlying clinics. The respiratory department has established a Thoracoscopy service based at NTGH and an EBUS service at WGH.This is an opportunity to join an organisation in which clinicians are at the forefront of management.
There is an opportunity to take on a dedicated teaching and education role as part of this post.
