Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a full time Hospital Specialty Doctor based at The Northumbria Hospital and supporting the delivery of our trust wide service.

Main duties of the job
The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing of the sessions may change as the service develops. The specific content of the job plan will be agreed with the individual candidate appointed into the post.
Consultants, Speciality grade doctors, Specialty Doctors, Trainees and Advanced Nurse Practitioners all provide direct clinical care for children referred to hospital. You will be part of the Paediatric senior out-of-hours rota which has been developed to comply with EWTD. This will involve providing resident cover in the evening and at weekends with the potential of some night shift working. This is a full shift rota which is integrated with Junior Doctors and Advanced Nurse Practitioners to provide a flexible workforce that matches fluctuating demand across the 24-hour period.

General Responsibilities include:
- The assessment, resuscitation and management of children attending the Northumbria Childrens Unit (emergency department and assessment unit).
- The admission and ongoing management of admitted children.
- The stabilisation of children prior to transfer to the Childrens Hospital in Newcastle.
- The assessment (with consultant support) of children with safeguarding concerns in conjunction with Childrens Social Care.
- Participation in consultant led Paediatric clinics.
- Supervision of junior paediatric trainees and trainee nurse practitioners
- Supporting junior doctors to maintain high standards of communication by attending handover and supporting the discharge process
The post-holder will be expected to participate in the day to day running of the service, teaching of junior staff and medical students. There will also be an expectation that the post-holder will be involved in clinical governance and quality improvement projects. He/she will be a member of the medical staff committee.
Specialty doctors are expected to take advantage of their weekly SPA allocation and every attempt will be made to support areas of personal professional development. The speciality doctor will work autonomously leading on the development of their specialist interest, this may be individually or leading a nursing and or medical team to deliver objectives/Targets for the service.
Other Duties:
- Participate in departmental meetings and continuing professional development activities including Quality Improvement, Peer Review and Acute Team meetings.
- Participation in post graduate teaching and induction of junior doctors
The post holder will be expected to undertake, under exceptional circumstances, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances and to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
