Job summary

The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing of sessions may change as the service develops.

A typical week would consist of 10 Programmed Activities (PA's);

  • Inpatient care on the Respiratory wards at NSECH
  • Respiratory clinics at NTGH, WGH and HGH
  • Admin and audit: Regional teaching plus monthly SpR teaching
  • Opportunity to attend Bronchoscopy and EBUS and gain experience, provided above activities covered
  • Contribution to the Respiratory Fellow rota

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of clinical areas also as required by the Head of Service, Business Unit Director, and Chief Executive. Standards will need to be driven by improvements with clear and explicit direction, encouraging constructive feedback and challenge from those involved.

Teaching and ResearchUndergraduate students from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne are regularly attached to clinical teams within the Trust. There is currently a relatively modest requirement to participate in the teaching of students and junior doctors. However, undergraduate student numbers have increased over recent years, as has the number of students allocated an attachment in Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The successful appointee would be expected to undertake teaching at an undergraduate level throughout the Trust, including the assessment of clinical medical students and examining from time to time, providing undergraduates with honest and constructive feedback in a supportive learning environment. The Trust has an expectation for teaching staff to give feedback to trainees opportunistically, teach by example and encourage trainees to be curious.

Research is encouraged and enabled by the Trusts active Research and Development Department.

Clinical Audit and GovernanceThe Trust is committed to providing patient care of the highest quality. Accordingly, the job plan (see appendix 2) is constructed to allow practical sessional commitment for medical audit, clinical governance and continuing medical education. The post holder will be required to participate in clinical audit activities (personal, departmental and inter-departmental) including clinical audit meetings.

The post holder will have an objective team approach to and participation in the Directorates efforts to monitor and improve standards and critical incident reporting whilst actively supporting evidence-based guideline implementation.

The Trusts Clinical Excellence Department is able to assist post holders with audit and clinical governance issues.

Continued Professional DevelopmentAttention and aspiration to lifelong learning (devising a personal development plan, participation in continuing medical education) will be supported by the Medicine and Emergency Care team as a whole and by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to demonstrate safe and knowledgeable clinical capabilities.

The post holder will have a reflective approach to their own practice with an ability to acknowledge poor behaviour and act upon feedback sought. The post holder will be required, with the approval of the Business Unit Management, to agree a programme of continuing professional development which meets his/her and service provision requirements.
