Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Northumbria Critical Care. Northumbria Critical Care is 15 bedded Critical Care unit within a Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.

Critical care is a busy, progressive unit with a clear patient-centred focus. We have made a strong commitment to quality. The team have a strong emphasis on developing health care practice through ownership, research/evidence-based practices, commitment and multidisciplinary involvement.

Main duties of the job

  • To co-ordinate and organise all staff within the department to provide quality nursing care and management for critical care unit.
  • To share skills/knowledge with colleagues and learners.
  • To contribute towards development within the critical care unit.
  • Internal rotation day and night day

  • To provide and facilitate quality nursing care to the critically ill patient
  • Rostered to take charge regularly of department and deputise for team leader
  • To facilitate the process of education and development of nursing and non-nursing staff within the team
  • Provide specialist advice for multidisciplinary staff working within the unit and as an Outreach resource
  • To contribute to the overall development of clinical practice within critical care
  • To support Modern Matron and Senior Sisters in the effective management of resources and personnel issues over a 24 hr period
  • To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A registered nurse on part 1 of the professional register, with current NMC registration
  • Specialised knowledge and experience through appropriate qualification in Critical Care nursing
  • Relevant teaching and assessing qualification to assist in cascading specialised skills/knowledge
  • Requires current mentorship passport
  • Advanced/Intermediate Life Support Certificate
  • Diploma/Degree in Nursing
  • Evidence of qualification to undertake the supervision, teaching and assessing of students (essential requirement for post, expectation this will be completed within an 18 month period)

Desirable

  • ECDL

Experience and knowledge

Essential

  • Significant post registration experience in critical care.
  • Professional knowledge acquired through substantial critical care experience
  • Evidence of ongoing training and development.

Desirable

  • ALERT course
  • Knowledge of or experience in coaching and mentoring practices and tools
  • Knowledge of or experience in Quality improvement tools, techniques and methods
  • Experience of working as a link nurse
  • Experience of a train the trainer role
