Job summary

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to expand it's services for Diabetes and Endocrinology as we develop and strengthen our 10 year strategy for the future.

We are looking to recruit full-time Consultant Physicians, both newly qualified and with post CCT experience in Diabetes & Endocrinology and General Medicine although less that full time would also be considered.

We would love to see applications from existing and new consultants with interests in ante-natal care, young person's care, footcare and endocrinology. We would also welcome applicants who have an interest in developing their leadership skills, services associated with technology, lipids management, bariatrics, education and research.

The successful applicants will also be expected to strengthen locality-based service delivery of Diabetes & Endocrinology services building our out of hospital model of care.

This post will be based at either North Tyneside General Hospital or Wansbeck General Hospital (this is yet to be determined) but will be trustwide with clinics on other trust sites.

There is the potential option to include some General Medicine on-call within the job plan which would be based out of the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate (s) will be jointly responsible for the provision of diabetes, endocrinology and general medical services to the population of Northumbria and will be encouraged to develop a sub-specialist interest to complement the other members of the department

The appointee(s) will provide continuing clinical responsibility for patients under his/her care and assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for patient care.

The appointee would also continue to provide educational and clinical supervision to trainees in specialty and general medicine.

The post holder will be required to participate in clinical audit activities including clinical audit meetings.

A typical week would consist of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including an allocation of 1.5 SPAs for Supported Professional Activities. Additional SPAs will be available dependant upon service need. A proposed job plan has been outlined in the job description and will be agreed on commencement of appointment.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the provision of cover on a shared basis with colleagues for periods of annual, sickness and study leave, except for prolonged absence where locum cover may be necessary.

The post holder will also contribute to the acute general medicine rota in the out of hours periods at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (currently 1 in 7 weekends).

The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing and location of sessions may change as the service develops.
