Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a busy Hip Preservation Unit in the North-East of England. The centre sees around 300-400 new hip referrals a year with more than 200 hip preservation procedures performed. The data is entered into the local Northumbria Hip Preservation Registry and the UK Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry.

The job will primarily involve working with Mr Ajay Malviya, who is the Past Chairman of the UK Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry and Deputy Editor of the Journal of Hip Preservation Surgery. You will be expected to present and publish research performed during the post. International graduates are welcome to apply, if you are eligible for GMC registration and have completed the equivalent of FRCS T&O examination in your respective country.

You should be GMC registered and hold the MBBS or equivalent medical qualification and FRCS (T&O) qualifications with one of the Surgical Colleges of Great Britain and Ireland. You should be able to demonstrate an interest in Hip Preservation surgery. This post may be eligible to be included as a BOA Clinical Leadership Fellowship. Please inform on application if you wish to pursue the BOA Clinical Leadership programme.

We are advertising for the period August 2026-27 and 2027-28.

Main duties of the job

It is estimated that during a year you will be exposed to 70-80 Periacetabular Osteotomies, 150 Hip arthroscopies and 200 primary joint replacement, concentrating on individuals within the younger adult age groups.

You will work within a department of 30 consultants who are all keen to improve practice, successfully adopting enhanced recovery for patients undergoing elective joint replacement.

You may be expected to join in the trauma on call rota, but this is to be discussed closer to the starting date of the post.
