Job summary

The Portering departments at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provide a variety of services to patients and departments, maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff,the provision of a high quality, efficient customer orientated Portering service and compliance with the Trust Patient Confidentiality Policy.

The successful candidate will be required to assist the Head Porter in the efficient running of the portering service. To provide an efficient and effective service as outlined below and compliance with the Trust Patient Confidentiality Policy.

Main duties of the job

To assist in the direction of patients and visitors.

To meet and escort the fire brigade following a fire of a false alarm.

To secure areas as required.

Changing of medical gas cylinders, adhering to health and safety guidelines.

To act as a working chargehand.

To escort patients to and from wards and departments.

The collection and delivery of linen, refuse, food trolleys, stores, beds, bedding, furniture, equipment, records and sharp-smart systems.

Conveyance of deceased patients to the mortuary.

Preparation of deceased patients for mortuary viewing (in exceptional circumstances).

Removal of all refuse from waste bins located externally (NTGH only).

To act in a professional and courteous manner when dealing with all disciplines of staff, suppliers and members of the public.

Participate in training programmes relevant to efficiency, hygiene, fire drills, manual handling, the health and safety statutory requirements and other such courses deemed necessary for the efficient operation of the department.

Consistently demonstration of due care and regard for the fabric, property, fixtures and fittings of all Trust estate, in particular walls, and wall coverings when conveying patients/equipment viatrolley, tug etc.
