Job summary

  • Are you an experienced Consultant Clinical Scientist in Clinical Chemistry with a passion for driving excellence and delivering a high quality clinical service? Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an exceptional candidate for the position of Consultant Clinical Scientist, a role essential in the Blood Sciences Department.
  • You will hold an MSc in Clinical Biochemistry (or equivalent) and HCPC registration. FRCPath will also be required.
  • This post will be ideal for someone who has a keen interest in providing a high quality service, as well as supporting the team with regional activities.

Main duties of the job

  • Our Consultant Clinical Scientists work in cooperation with the Consultant Chemical Pathologist to provide a comprehensive, high quality, cost-effective scientific and clinical service (analytical and interpretative) to primary and secondary care, to support the diagnosis and management of biochemical clinical problems.
  • You will provide leadership in a team delivering a comprehensive Clinical Chemistry, POCT & Toxicology service for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust - in particular to be responsible for maintaining and improving scientific standards within Clinical Chemistry across the Trust and maintain the quality of the service to the (ISO) standards set nationally by UKAS.

  • To provide a Consultant advisory service in all aspects of clinical biochemistry to medical, nursing and paramedic staff within the Trust and its associated community (GPs and Mental Health Trust).
  • To assist in the provision of a specialist Toxicology service.
  • To be responsible for ensuring compliance with Clinical Governance including quality assurance and audit.
  • To be integral for the provision of Clinical Chemistry trust wide including initiation, implementation and maintenance of Quality of assays and oversight of research, development and audit activities.
  • To be eligible for appointment as Clinical Lead for Clinical Chemistry Trust-wide.
  • This role may involve working clinically with the Point of Care Team overseeing the work of the PoCT Co-ordinator. This role has been rotated around Consultant staff members.
  • To participate in the on call out of hours Clinical Chemistry service.
