A fantastic opportunity has arisen within the speciality of Orthopaedics at Northumbria Healthcare Trust for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Deputy Ward Manager with proven leadership skills to join our team on the Elective Orthopaedic Unit at Wansbeck Hospital.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, patient focused nurse who is able to work within a team setting to deliver exceptional care to our patients. We are a friendly, supportive and patient focused team who work quickly and efficiently to ensure our patients are cared for in a safe and efficient manner.
Our nurse-led unit is distinct in that we have several areas within the unit. We have 19 beds for elective orthopaedic surgery, 4 beds for patients requiring enhanced recovery post-surgery for up to 24 hours before stepping down to the main ward. We pride ourselves in being one of the leading units for day-case joint replacement surgery.
We also house the Bone and Joint Infection Unit for the trust, which is a specialist unit for patients with bone and joint infections. The unit is the only one of this kind in the north east specialising in complex orthopaedic complications overseen by infectious disease consultants and microbiology.

Main duties of the job
- Support the Ward Manager with the day-to-day management of the Orthopaedic Unit to deliver an efficient and safe service for patients, carers and staff.
- To assume responsibility for the devolved management of the ward/department, including the assessment of care needs, the implementation of evidence based programme of care in the absence of the Ward Manager.
- To supervise, support and educate junior members of the team.
- To provide senior nurse ward cover in the absence of the Ward Manager.
- To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
- To be responsible for all nursing care standards and to maintain high clinical standards.
- To act as a team leader and co-ordinate the multi-disciplinary care of a group of patients.
