Job summary

Applications are invited from qualified, enthusiastic and well-motivated Biomedical Scientists, holding a BSc in Biomedical Science and currently registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to join our Toxicology Team in this UKAS and HCPC accredited laboratory.

The Wansbeck Toxicology department currently operates between the hours of 08:30 to 17:00, which may be subject to future expansion.This post is a 12-month fixed term contract for cover of maternity leave and is based at Wansbeck General Hospital in the Toxicology department.For internal applicants currently working within the Clinical Chemistry department, recruitment will be via secondment for the 12-month period.

This post falls within the provisions of Agenda for Change Annex 20 - Development of Professional Roles, whereby upon completion of an agreed set of competencies you may move onto the next pay band without the need for an application for a post at a higher level.

Main duties of the job

The role involves the receipt, data entry and analytic preparation of patient samples including chain of custody toxicology samples and is a key role in supporting the diagnostic service particularly our toxicology service based on this site. Part of the job role involves the operation and use of AU680 Beckman-Coulter, Waters systems (LC-MS/MS and Quadrupole Time-of-flight MS), headspace GC for the confirmation of drugs in clinical samples.

The successful candidate will be required to be DBS checked for Scheduled Drugs, as part of the role involves logging the receipt, audit, use and disposal of Scheduled Drugs.

The role requires a calm, organised approach with good attention to detail and good keyboard skills. Experience of method development and an understanding of toxicology would be an advantage but not essential.
