Job summary
Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, Band 6- Rendcomb Ward (Oncology/Haematology)
The post holder will be professionally accountable for the maintenance of standards and professional practice as set by the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour and relevant professional guidelines.
They will regularly take charge of the practice setting or defined area of the practice setting / group of patients and take responsibility for ensuring the coordination and direct provision of high standard of holistic, patient centred care by assessing nursing care and health education needs, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care for each patient.
To be designated to act as a deputy to the person holding continuing responsibility for the organisation and management of the practice setting.
To demonstrate and facilitate others to develop the necessary skills and experience in ward/department management and provide leadership in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.
Additional working pattern details: To cover the ward in a 24 hour period

Main duties of the job

- Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with lead staff.
- Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust, and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed.
- To support the ward manager in the running of the ward including ensuring safe staffing in line with template and acuity.
- Assist the ward manager with appraisals, sickness and performance management in line with trust policies and procedures.
- Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.
- Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required.

- Registered Adult Nurse with current registration status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and able to meet the revalidation requirements with appropriate teaching/assessing qualification and significant post- registration experience.
- To have knowledge and understanding to be able to act as a resource and support the nursing team to provide high quality, evidence-based care.
- Has relevant knowledge to be able to assist with the co-ordination of staff training to ensure a high professional standard in all aspects of patient care.
- To work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Relevant acute nursing experience in Oncology/Haematology.
- Recognised Nursing Degree or equivalent.
- Evidence of post-registration qualification.
- SACT qualification and experience with administering SACT and being able to advise patients on side/effects treatment.
- Excellent organizational, line management, interpersonal and leadership skills.
- A willingness to develop knowledge and skill is essential.
- Demonstrate proven change management skills.
- An ability to perform clinical skills with dexterity.
