Pre-assessment Clinical Healthcare Support Worker, Band 3

Job summary

28 hours a week

You will be working as part of the Pre-operative Assessment team in both Cheltenham General and Gloucester Royal Hospitals. All patients' fitness is assessed prior to a variety of surgical procedures. Running clinics along side staff nurses to capture patient health status by conducting observations and screening measures.

Support the pathway of optimisation for patients' general health and specific conditions such as anaemia. You will work as part of the team ensuring the patient can be assessed fully prior to their surgery. We work closely with the team of Anaesthetists on a daily basis to ensure our patients are well prepared and informed to have the best and safest surgical journey from start to finish.

Additional working pattern details: Working 2 days 9.5 hrs and 1 day 9 hrs. Shifts starting from 08:00 - 18:00, week days only.

Main duties of the job

- Recording vital signs, infection prevention screening, record ECG, record height and weight and urine analysis.

- Able to identify normal from abnormal observations and notify RN.

- Administrative work e.g., preparing for clinic

- Provide basic health promotion e.g., provide patient with patient information leaflet, alcohol awareness and smoking cessation.

- Completes phlebotomy and blood glucose testing as directed by RN.

- Initiates additional investigations based upon results of history / vital signs in accordance with local policy.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 4 GCSE's (or equivalent) including English, Mathematics and preferably a Science, Physical Education or Health and Social care-based subject
  • GCSE Grade D (3) or above in English and Math or equivalent Functional Skills Level 1 in English and Maths
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Word and email programmes
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills verbally, in writing and the use of IT
  • Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
  • Self-motivated and able to work under own initiative and prioritise workload
  • Acts as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the Trust's Values and Behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice.

  • Experience within an acute surgical setting
  • Previous experience in a relevant speciality
  • Phlebotomy skills
