Job summary

We're offering a rare and exciting opportunity to join us as an Apprentice Clinical Technologist in Medical Physics, specialising in Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection. This 3 year Healthcare Science Practitioner Apprenticeship provides a fully funded pathway to becoming a Medical Physics Technologist, allowing you to earn a salary while completing a degree and gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic and rewarding healthcare science career.

As an apprentice, you will gain practical experience in diagnostic radiology and radiation protection, working alongside experienced professionals in a supportive and collaborative environment. This apprenticeship combines practical, hands-on training with academic study, giving you the skills and experience needed to work with a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment. This is a Band 5 role funded at Annex 21 for the 3 year duration of the apprenticeship, with a starting salary of £20,847 progressing from 65% in Year 1, to 70% in Year 2, and 75% in Year 3. Successful completion of the apprenticeship and degree will lead to a full-time B5 substantive post.

Main duties of the job

As part of the Medical Physics (Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection) team, you will assist in delivering performance testing and provide scientific expertise, advice, and support to ensure the safe and optimal use of X-ray, MRI, ultrasound, lasers, and other non-ionising radiation sources across Gloucestershire and for other clients. This is a varied and rewarding clinical role in a supportive team environment.

The educational component of this apprenticeship is delivered by the University of West England (UWE), leading to a BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science - Radiation Physics degree. Study is mostly via distance learning (one day per week), with approximately 15 days per year spent on campus at UWE. Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the UWE degree course: Healthcare Science Practitioner (Medical Physics Technology) - UWE Bristol.

All practical training will take place in Gloucestershire, primarily at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, with opportunities across acute and community hospitals and other healthcare settings.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will work within the Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection team within the Medical Physics department in Gloucester. The team consists of 9 Clinical Scientists, Clinical Technologists, admin support & other trainees, who work to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors in relation to the use of radiation.

This role involves carrying out quality control checks (under direct supervision) on diagnostic x-ray, MRI and ultrasound equipment in areas including general radiology, CT, DEXA, interventional radiology and other services including cardiology, theatres, endoscopy, breast screening and the community dental service. This role also assists with the provision of Radiation Protection services to external customers under our commercial arm, GLOSRAD.

1.0 Provision of Clinical Services/Clinical Responsibilities

1.1 To support the work of Medical Physics Experts by performing periodic testing and annual radiation safety audits on x-ray equipment as required by current legislation. Including:

a. Plan & undertake routine testing of x-ray & imaging equipment.

b. To act as an operator under IR(ME)R regulations in accordance with Trust Policies.

c. Documenting, reviewing and analysing results for compliance with manufacturers specification and current legislation and standards under supervision.

d. Producing reports detailing QA testing results of work to share with clinical teams.

e. Suggesting and implementing improvements in methods and analysis used for user QA and support user audit.

1.2 To assist with radiation protection measurements relevant to diagnostic radiology and to assist the diagnostic radiology departments covered by the Medical Physics Service in their compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 and other relevant legislation.

1.3 To assist with auditing compliance with radiation safety legislation & Trust Policy.

1.4 To assist with audit of staff and patient radiation doses.

1.5 Become familiar with and ensure activities are carried out within the local quality framework. Participate in the development, routine operation & maintenance of quality systems including procedures for own area of work, ensuring they conform with Statutory Regulations and Approved Codes of Practice.

1.6 To inform the most senior member of the Diagnostic Radiology Physics Department immediately when any problems or errors are either detected or suspected during the post holders work.

7.4 Ability to use IT systems such as Patient Archiving and Communication system (PACS), & MS Office for data analysis, report writing & presentations.
