Registered Day Surgery Nurse, Band 5

Job summary

You will be working as part of the day surgery team delivering exceptional care for the patients attending the unit. Day case surgery is becoming more common, it now makes up approximately 70% of all surgery performed. The patients will expect, and will receive, the highest standards of professional care by all members of the team who will be involved.

To work in a clinical environment and provide a high standard of patient care, able to assess and prepare both major and day surgery patients prior to undergoing elective surgery either under local or general anaesthesia. Provide post-operative care to the day case patients and ensure a safe discharge home the same day. To liaise with the MDT, to ensure a positive patient experience and optimal surgical outcome. We care for patients undergoing surgery from multiple specialities.

Main duties of the job

Our patients will expect, and will receive, the highest standards of professional care by all members of the team. You will work in a clinical environment and provide a high standard of patient care, whilst being able to assess and prepare both major and day surgery patients prior to undergoing elective surgery either under local or general anaesthesia. You will provide post-operative care to day case patients and ensure a safe discharge home the same day. You will also liaise with the MDT, to ensure a positive patient experience and optimal surgical outcome.

Recording of observations and assessments of patients additional supportive tasks e.g. venepuncture and ECGs

Undertaking activities which include the moving and handling of both patients and equipment.

Experience

  • Experience (through placement or employment) of working in an acute clinical environment

  • Previous Day Surgery experience
  • Previous experience in a relevant surgical speciality

  • Ability to work in a fast paced high pressure environment
  • Ability to identify and appropriately escalate the deteriorating patient

  • Evidence of completing nurse led discharges competently and confidently
