Job summary

SAS Doctors and Dentists are a diverse group with a wide range of skills, experience and specialties. SAS doctors are distinct from Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs) who work in fixed term contracts for shorter periods of time. The SAS grade provides an opportunity for doctors to have career progression to the top of the grade over a number of years whilst gaining experience and developing their skills.

The SAS Tutor is an experienced SAS Doctor or Dentist who works within the organisational structure to support and promote the interests and development needs of SAS Doctors and Dentists. Potential candidates should have support of their relevant Specialty Director before applying for this post and ensure they have capacity in their job plan to undertake this role.

The interview for this vacancy will be on Friday 17th April at Sandford Education Centre.

Main duties of the job

Provide support and guidance to SAS Doctors and Dentists in the Trust, and champion the needs of these colleagues within their organisation in collaboration with Clinical Leads, the Director of Medical Education (DME) and Senior Hospital Management.

Take a Leadership role in both the Professional and Career Development of SAS colleagues and their contribution to Education and Training in relevant Specialties.

To provide expert advice on matters related to SAS.

Lead on the organisation and delivery of internal and external developmental programmes to improve and support the developmental needs of SAS, ensuring that they are supported by the organisation.Support SAS doctors and work with SAS advocate to achieve appropriate time in their job plans for supporting professional activity (SPA).

Help SAS colleagues requiring additional support.

During the tenure of the post, it is anticipated that area(s) of responsibility will change and develop over time in response to the Workforce Planning and requirements of this staff group.

1. Key Responsibilities

Routinely review and update the Induction processes for new SAS joining the organisation.

Develop a working knowledge of all SAS Doctors and Dentists across the organisation.

Work with SAS advocate to ensure Professional and Career Development needs of all SAS colleagues are addressed.

Establish strong links with other Departments in the organisation including People & Organisational Development, Finance and Lead Clinicians across the Organisation.

Represent the SAS Doctors and Dentists at Senior Clinical and Workforce meetings and ensure equity for SAS Doctors and Dentists across the organisation, particularly with respect to Professional Development.

Liaise with appropriate Governance and funding bodies such as NHS England (NHSE) for support with projects and innovative workstreams to meet the Professional Development needs of SAS colleagues.

Submit annual SAS Funding Returns to the Deanery as per regional NHSE policy

2. Specific Professional and Managerial Tasks

Internal:

Provide support with Local Induction, Job Planning, Appraisal, and awareness of opportunities available for career progression for new SAS Colleagues joining the Trust.

Work with SAS Advocate and Clinical /Service Leads to highlight SAS Doctors & Dentists working in their Specialty and facilitate support of their Personal and Professional Development.

Advise and support SAS Doctors & Dentists through appraisal and revalidation processes and ensure through feedback that all SAS colleagues undergo Personally Developmental Annual Appraisals.

Link with Less -Than-Full-Time (LTFT) and Supported Return to Training Champions to ensure that aligned opportunities for SAS colleagues are provided.

Support Recruitment and Retention of SAS doctors and Dentists alongside the SAS Advocate.

To identify Specialties where further Specialty-Specific development of SAS Doctors or Dentists is required.

To identify generic Skills Gaps and take a Lead with planning generic Education and Development sessions that benefit wider groups of SAS colleagues, including non-technical skills such as Human Factors and Quality Improvement.

Support and guide SAS colleagues wishing to apply for entry to Specialty Training or applying for the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).

Advise and support SAS colleagues who are subject to investigations relating to Professional issues and lead on/assist programmes aimed at supporting these SAS colleagues.

Organise training of SAS colleagues to enable them to take on roles such as Educational and Clinical Supervisors for Resident Doctors.

Support and promote SAS colleagues in developing roles in non-clinical areas such as Management, Research, and Clinical Governance.

Assist SAS Doctors & Dentists to identify and support the needs of Resident Doctors requiring additional support.

Review the results of National Data Collections such as the General Medical Council SAS and LED Survey and work from other organisations such as the British Medical Association (BMA) to improve the Working Lives of SAS Doctors and Dentists, forming and implementing the organisational response to any issues identified.

Represent the Director of Medical Education (DME) when required on issues related to SAS Doctors & Dentists.

Provide support to the DME on matters of professional conduct raised through the Responsible Officer forums and other internal / external meetings.

Attend Local Faculty Group Meetings and Faculty/Supervisor Update Days as appropriate.

Provide the DME with structured feedback from SAS Doctors & Dentists on the strengths and weaknesses of the CPD opportunities within all Departments and Specialties.

External:

Liaise with the Associate Postgraduate Dean for SAS within the NHSE on SAS Doctors & Dentists matters and concerns.

Attend SAS Tutor Meetings held by NHSE (or other) as required, and provide structured feedback on CPD Opportunities.

Facilitate and participate in regional SAS Development Days.
