Job summary

We are an enthusiastic and adaptable Care of The Elderly Team of 13 consultants. We wish to appoint three new consultant colleagues to join our expanding Care of the Elderly and Frailty service. We are looking for candidates who have a special interest in orthogeriatrics, peri-operative medicine, interface medicine and community geriatrics.

Successful applicants will have a base ward or work in the community with an additional opportunity to develop their specialist interest. All consultant posts include time working with our increasingly successful Frailty Assessment Service which encompasses a Direct Assessment Pathway, Frailty Assessment Unit, Frailty SDEC and a Virtual Ward which is currently in development.

The post also incorporates a fixed weekend Care of the Elderly post take ward round and Frailty Assessment Service (FAS) sessions on a 1 in 8 basis (but no on-call). This frequency will fall as we continue expanding our consultant workforce.

Main duties of the job

This is a substantive post working within in Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England. Whilst advertised as a full time post, we will accept part time or flexible working requests for the right candidate and aim to have one day working from home to support wellbeing.

We are a large organisation providing acute services from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester and Cheltenham General Hospital. Within our population 21% are over the age of 65 and the number aged 65 and over will rise by two-thirds between now and 2030. We expect the post-holder to develop and lead a robust service in order to provide high quality care to patients in a timely manner:

  • To be responsible for patients seen by the FAS service on a rota basis
  • To be responsible for medical input to general elderly medicine inpatients on one of our COTE wards

  • Full General Medical Council registration.
  • On Specialist Register for General (Internal)) Medicine and Geriatric Medicine via: ?CCT or CESR-CP (Combined Programme) (proposed CCT/CESR-CP date must be within 6 months of interview - CESR or European Community Rights
  • MRCP

Desirable

  • Higher degree
  • Teaching qualification Management/Leadership qualification
  • Membership of British Geriatrics Society

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Proven clinical skills in Care of the Elderly, General and Acute Medicine and in leading a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work closely with colleagues in Acute Medicine and Emergency Medicine

Desirable

  • Experience in community geriatrics e.g. community hospitals, nursing homes, 'interface' geriatrics

Audit and evidence-based practice:

Essential

  • Experience in devising, conducting and applying audit results and then closing the loop
