- To have a leading role in the quality management of the Clinical Biochemistry service

- To deputise for the Healthcare Scientist Service Manager in all aspects of their role.

This role is to empower the post holder to act as an enabler of continual improvement and drive a highly effective and efficient clinical service.

The post holder will work with stakeholders across the county to optimise the clinical biochemistry service, meeting the needs of patients and service users, supporting best care for everyone.

Main duties of the job

Act as lead specialist in Clinical Biochemistry and its application in clinical practice.

The post holder is responsible for supporting the department in maintaining financial control of the Clinical Biochemistry pay and non-pay budgets (£3.2 million approx.) and the Clinical Biochemistry element of the Roche MES (£2.5 million approx.)

Act as line manager for the staff in the Department to include all Biomedical Scientists, Trainees, Associate Practitioners, Medical Laboratory Assistants and Admin & Clerical Staff. This will include all HR functions including sickness and performance management, disciplinary and grievance resolution.

Leading quality as part of a team, ensuring the quality of the service and conformance/compliance with standards (including UKAS ISO 15189:2022), guidelines and legal requirements. Maintain accreditation and meet national and Trust objectives through management of the department's Quality Management System

Responsible for managing the pay and non-pay budgets of the Clinical Biochemistry Service.

Deputise for Laboratory Manager in all aspects of the service including attending Department, Trust (Management Board, Finance, Divisional, Operational etc), ICB, ICS & Regional meetings

Expert knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry LIMS system

To act as subject matter expert in communications between the department and LIMS support and to influence system design

About us

The department operates on two sites and provides a 24 hour per day 365 days per year service that receives in excess of 1.2 million requests (13.2 million tests) per year. The post holder is responsible for personnel issues (including recruitment, appraisal, disciplinary, grievance etc) and the deployment of staff within Clinical Biochemistry (40+ staff) in order to provide this service. The use of specialised knowledge to provide a high-quality service, responsive to the needs of users and manage resources effectively is also required.

- All members of the Clinical Biochemistry department across both sites

- Members of other Pathology Departments including Consultant Heads of Department, Lab Managers, Pathology Service Manager & Pathology Quality Manager.

- Clinicians, GPs, nurses and other hospital professionals.

- Trust Senior Management: Specialty Director for Pathology, Chief of Service D&S, Divisional leads, Nursing Administration & Training, Clinical Risk & Effectiveness, Finance & Procurement depts. etc.

- Other hospital departments Procurement, Paymasters, Health & Safety Services, CITS/Digital department, Estates, Medical Engineering etc.
