Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Gloucester Academy Deputy Medical Dean from all eligible senior doctors within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

There is 1 funded session (PA) per week allocated to this Academy leadership role. The Deputy Dean will work alongside the Academy Dean.

Main duties of the job

Bristol Medical School delivers medical education in partnership with a network of clinical academies, representing a partnership between the University of Bristol and local NHS Trusts, including primary care and mental health Trusts.

A clinical academy is not a legally recognised entity; it cannot employ staff or own property or equipment but is constituted as a formal partnership arrangement between the University and the NHS Trusts and is subject to the University's Regulations and Guidelines for Educational Partnerships.

Each clinical academy is led by an Academy Medical Dean, a senior clinician with designated sessions funded by the University of Bristol. In some Academies a decision can be taken by the University and the Academy to share these sessions between the Academy Dean and Deputy Academy Dean(s), or joint Academy Deans.

The Academy Medical Dean carries responsibility both for academic leadership of the academy and for students' academic supervision and pastoral care. They will be a full member of the Academy Management Group. The Academy Management Group is represented by one of its members on the MB ChB Programme Management Committee of the University of Bristol Medical School. The Medical School sits within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Academy Medical Dean (AMD) is responsible for ensuring that each student attached to their academy receives high quality learning and teaching experiences by working with year and clerkship co-ordinators, tutors and teachers to satisfy standards and requirements laid down by the GMC and the University of Bristol according to the curriculum approved by its Programme Management Committee. In order to achieve this the AMD will need to work with organisations to whom clinical care and teaching is subcontracted by the Trust.

The AMD, or deputy, will meet all students who are placed in their clinical academy on their arrival, and will advise times as to their availability in accordance with the MB ChB Programme Open Door Policy.

The AMD is responsible for ensuring that all students who are placed in their academy have access to and know how to access pastoral support.

The AMD will arrange for a suitable deputy during periods of absence.

The AMD is expected to take part in Objective Structured Clinical Examinations at the end of years 3 and 4 and in workplace-based assessments. They are expected to support the recruitment of examiners in their own academy.

The AMD is responsible for ensuring local arrangements and personnel are in place to deliver assessments as determined by the University.

The AMD is responsible for encouraging feedback from students about clinical attachments in accordance with Faculty requirements. The AMD will provide an annual written report for quality assurance purposes.

The AMD is responsible for identifying both areas of excellence and areas of unsatisfactory learning and teaching from student feedback locally and will be informed of problem areas from central analysis of student feedback. They should report these findings locally and address any failure to deliver the curriculum.

The AMD is responsible for building close working relationships with leaders and staff of other education and training programmes in the Trusts, to encourage and foster opportunities for inter-professional education and training.

The AMD will be available to advise students who have personal problems that impair their ability to attend and engage with clinical learning opportunities. The AMD will be granted access to the student support plans and the e-portfolio for each student at the academy.

The AMD will liaise with our Senior Tutor(s), where appropriate, when a student has significant health and/or welfare issues normally with a students consent. During an out of hours emergency the AMD will be able to contact the University of Bristols Security services on0117 331 1223. The AMD may be asked to supervise closely a medical student with specific problems and arrange remedial teaching, support or counselling if required.

The AMD will provide an effective source of information for students and teaching staff regarding the implementation of the medical undergraduate curriculum.

The AMD will be informed of Medical Undergraduate Tariff (MUT) funding paid to the Trusts in total and is responsible for its distribution to the different specialties involvedin the delivery of medical undergraduate teaching.When the Medical School holds an inspection visit, they will be expected to present data demonstrating how much of the MUT funding is used to pay relevant co-ordinators and tutors within the academy.

The AMD will be expected to have representation on the Trust Board, via a nominated director with whom the AMD should meet regularly. They will form a close working relationship with the Trusts executive directors to foster the partnership with the University of Bristol.
