Job summary

The Matron will be an inclusive, transformational, autonomous professional at the same time as being a quality advocate and clinical leader. Responsible to the Trust for multiple clinical services. The post holder will have strategic responsibility with the General Manager and Clinical Lead to ensure business plans, budgets, workforce and continual staff development with an ethos of continual listening and engaging are in place to deliver quality of service for the division and Trust. The Matron will work with the speciality tri to co design a strategy for the service. The Matron will report on a day to day basis into the Clinical lead, but will be line managed by the Deputy Divisional Director of Quality & Nursing (DDDQN). They will have responsibility to ensure all clinical, quality, safety, financial and workforce targets are agreed and delivered upon and be professionally accountable to the Divisional Director of Quality & Nursing for Medicine (DDQN).

The post holder will be expected to support and work within different specialities within medicine rotating on a 2 yearly basis to broaden their experience, knowledge and skills, as part of our commitment to ongoing professional development.

Main duties of the job

The Matron will provide visible, transformational leadership to nursing teams across designated specialties, ensuring high standards of safe, effective, and compassionate care. They will act as a clinical expert and role model, promoting evidence-based practice, patient safety, and professional accountability. The role involves overseeing staff performance, workforce planning, recruitment, and development, while supporting continuous improvement and innovation. The Matron will lead on governance, infection prevention, and emergency response, working closely with multi-disciplinary teams. They will contribute to service strategy, represent nursing at divisional and corporate levels, and foster a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and excellence across all areas of responsibility.
