Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's Pathology department are excited to be recruiting a new Medical Laboratory Assistant to Chemical Pathology which provides extensive diagnostic support to both secondary and primary care NHS services as well as a range of private health care providers too.
This opportunities is a pivotal role within the Pathology department and the successful Medical laboratory Assistant's play an active role in the support of the Clinical Biochemistry Department to support specimen workloads received from both within the two main hospital sites and a vast range of community healthcare locations. Our laboratories provide analytical and clinical interpretive services to the health community in Gloucestershire, including all inpatients/outpatients in the Acute and community hospitals and all GP surgeries
As the Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will be supporting our team in the delivery of a high quality and ever growing diagnostic service.
We are look for someone with a good level of basic education who is enthusiastic to work in healthcare in an NHS laboratory, we are interested in having you aboard.
Please note that on this occasion we cannot consider this role to support IBMS registration portfolios.
The proposed interview date for this vacancy will be during August 2025.
Main duties of the job
You will help receipt a range of blood and other biological samples which require preparation for immediate analysis or storage.
The role is designed to support the receipt of patient specimens, both electronically and manually with a high degree of accuracy. Ensuring barcoded labelling and sample transfer is achieved in a timely fashion.
You will support all routine and non-routine tasks required prior to sample analysis or storage. You will be involved in the setup and routine operation of complex pre and post analytical equipment.
There will be a requirement to work in both main hospital sites in Gloucester and Cheltenham, and a need to work both core hours (8.30-17:00) and shifted days (12.30-9pm) as defined by rosters.
Input request details accurately into the laboratory computer system.
To check sample type and volume to ensure all samples are suitable for the tests requested. Undertake routine maintenance and disinfection procedures.
Handle telephone enquiries.
Assist the Biomedical Scientist Team in the laboratory and the Business Administration Manager.

We process over 900,000 patient requests (7 million tests) per annum and provide a 24 hrs per day 365 days per year service.We are a hard working team focused on improving patient outcomes and delivering high quality and fast turnaround times for all patient test requests.
