Main duties of the job

The role of the Band 7 Urology Nurse Practitioner is to provide specialist care to patients post-operatively with catheter, nephrostomy care management and stent insertions. In addition, to assess post-operative symptoms and concerns. The nurse practitioner will triage patient presenting complaints to assess and plan treatment. The nurse practitioner works closely with the clinicians, ward nursing staff and administrative team to provide timely and effective care. The nurse practitioner will have specialist knowledge and understanding of a range of urological conditions, the management and treatment of these conditions. In addition, the nurse practitioner supports junior members of the team and service with training and learning opportunities.

The urology nurse practitioner will be involved in delivering nurse-led diagnostic clinics on a weekly basis and supporting the patient cancer pathways within the service.

The urology department is situated in Cheltenham General Hospital and is working collaboratively to become a Centre of Excellence with the plan for a Urology Investigations Unit. This specialist unit will consist of diagnostic procedure rooms, lithotripsy service, Urology Assessment Unit (UAU) and nurse led clinics for our patients. The urology nurse practitioners provide a nurse-led service in the UAU department and support running nurse led follow up clinics working alongside the multi-disciplinary team.

Use advanced specialist theoretical and practical skills to assess the physical and psycho-social needs of patients providing both expert clinical advice to patients and carers and an accessible service, through the provision of consultant led inpatient, outpatient and specialist outreach services. To read and interpret results of investigations and act on these appropriately.

Lead the strategic vision of specialist Urology nursing to include the proposal, development and implementation of policy and service development for own area and other areas beyond immediate remit.

To undertake nurse led diagnostic clinics for flexible cystoscopy and/or Local Anaesthetic Template Prostate (LATP) biopsy procedures.

Undertake specialist pre-assessment of patients undergoing major Urological surgery to include written informed consent for invasive procedures (within Trust guidelines) and effective discharge planning, ensuring services delivered locally wherever possible. Promotion of Enhanced Recovery Programme ERAS.

Demonstrate advanced level of clinical reasoning and judgement, and demonstrate ability to make decisions in the absence of evidence or when data are conflicting.

Work autonomously examining and diagnosing Urological complaints, making decisions about treatment, investigation, admission, follow up and discharge, referring on to consultant colleagues when reaching the limit of own expertise.

Responsible for the delivery of a detailed, accurate and potentially complex clinical handover and to produce detailed and accurate written information within the medical notes regarding all clinical assessments, investigations completed and requested and treatments administered. Maintaining accurate and contemporaneous patient records.

Frequently communicate with patients, carers and health professionals using a variety of communication skills in order to disseminate complex nursing and clinical information which may be of a highly distressing, emotional, sensitive or contentious nature.

At the forefront of practice innovation, to ensure delivery of highly specialised and safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment by creating precedents using innovative solutions, appropriate equipment and resources.
