Job summary
As a senior management team member, the post holder ensures the Division's day-to-day operations run smoothly, driving high-quality, patient-centred services that are clinically effective and cost-efficient.
They lead, manage, and deploy resources effectively while undertaking task-based work across specialties to deliver solutions and transformation.
Reporting to the Divisional Director of Operations, the post holder coordinates and prioritises the efficient delivery of complex clinical services in the Surgery Division. They manage daily operations to meet safety, quality, and patient access standards within agreed resources.
They identify innovative solutions to key Divisional challenges, leading actions that enhance financial sustainability, efficiency, and productivity. Working closely with the Divisional Triumvirate (Chief of Service, Director of Operations, and Divisional Nursing Director), they support performance, assurance, and reporting. They oversee business continuity and emergency preparedness in collaboration with other Divisions and support services.
The post holder also liaises with commissioners and system partners to optimise patient flow, maintain safety, strengthen service resilience, and align emergency plans.

Main duties of the job
The post holder collaborates with Clinical Leads to drive change, modernisation, and the achievement of National, Trust, and Divisional performance goals. They oversee the operational, speciality-based running of the Division, working alongside the Chief of Service, Divisional Chief Nurse, and Divisional Director of Operations.
They lead the coordination of the Division's Strategic Business Plan, identifying opportunities and supporting Service Leads with business planning and change management. Cross-divisional workstreams are managed as required.
Patient quality, safety, clinical governance, and risk management are coordinated with support from the Divisional Chief Nurse. Strong leadership ensures high-quality, patient-led service integration.The role involves data analysis, forming judgments on service performance, and implementing improvements. Effective relationships with key partners, including the public and clinical commissioning groups, enable seamless service delivery with clinical team involvement.
The post holder deputises for the Divisional Director, leads operational performance monitoring for RTT, Cancer, and DM01, and collaborates with FSP, Transformation, and PMO teams to coordinate savings delivery.
