Job responsibilities

Communication

The post holder must be able to:

Communicate with the key stakeholders to maximise the success of SBLCBv3.

Provide timely and accurate progress reports to all stakeholders.

In collaboration with other senior midwives and midwifery managers contribute to providing and collecting evidence for achievement of SBLCBv3 at all levels, specifically in relation to standards where the care bundle requires evidence/audits to support the Trusts compliance and submission to the Maternity Incentive Scheme (MIS).

Work closely with the Consultant Midwife, the Education Lead Midwife and the Quality and Governance Lead Midwife to achieve key deliverables

Develop and implement action plans to rectify deficiencies identified and report to the senior midwifery team regularly.

Liaise closely with individuals when there is an issue with any of the elements within the SBLCBv3.

Develop communication networks with local and national teams that are beneficial in improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Work closely with the MNVP to listen to service user feedback and target improvement work in line with SBLCBv3.

Analysis and Judgement

The midwife must be able to:

Facilitate the development and maintenance of SBLCBv3 including audit of policies, protocols, guidelines and standards, ensuring they meet current recommendations.

Act as a resource for staff to access and raise awareness of national and local guidance/policies that may impact the delivery of care.

Ensure that quality standards are set and monitored and that clinical risk management and clinical audit are an integral part of practice development.

Facilitate the implementation of national and local quality improvement initiatives in relation to the 6 elements of the SBLCBv3.

Establish effective communication and good working relationships with multi professional colleagues within the Trust and across the LMNS to support effective service delivery.

Ensure the service meets the Maternity Incentive Scheme (MIS) standards in relation to SBLCBv3.

Planning and Organisation

The midwife must be able to:

Support the Lead Midwife for Education in the development of training programmes that adequately reflect the needs of the service and the requirements of the SBLCBv3.

Ensure the training needs analysis (TNA) is updated in line with the requirements of the SBLCBv3 and that the provision of training is in accordance with the Maternity Incentive Scheme.

Be responsible and actively involved in the identification, coordination and provision of up-to-date training on relevant aspects of the SBLCBv3 for the multidisciplinary team.

Be responsible and take the lead for the successful implementation of the role objectives and highlight any areas needing development to the Consultant Midwife.

Use effective time management skills and have regular one-to-ones with the Consultant Midwife and Maternity Assurance Programme Manager to ensure optimum service and personal development.

Policy / Service Development

The midwife will be contributing to the development and updating of relevant guidelines to the SBLCBv3.

In liaison with the senior midwifery team, ensure there is a system of monitoring compliance with all the process indicators of the SBLCBv3.

Where deficiencies are identified, support the implementation and monitoring of action plans and escalate any concerns in a timely fashion.

Work alongside the Quality and Governance Lead midwife to undertake gap analyses against national updates to the SBLCBv3.

Leading and Managing

Act as a clinical role model for effective clinical leadership, enabling and facilitating others to take forward initiatives to achieve the implementation of SBLCBv3 and reduce the rate of stillbirths.

Information Resources

Provide reports on the delivery of SBLCBv3 at the governance meetings, and at Trust and ICB level.

Raise any issues for escalation to the senior midwifery team.

At times, attend and present at wider network meetings.

Research & Development

The midwife will:

Liaise with the audit lead to ensure the clinical audit programme meets the requirements of SBLCBv3.

Contribute to a culture which enables midwives to undertake and disseminate research evidence within clinical areas.

Promote a research culture which enables midwives to reflect on their own practice and improve care and birth outcomes.

Support the development of a learning culture to inform any changes in practice.

Lead on the development of clinical audit cycles in relation to SBLCBv3.

Participate in the review and update of clinical policies and protocols to reflect the latest evidence or updated national guidance.

Qualifications

Essential

• Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
• Hold a Diploma or (preferably) Degree in Midwifery
• Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and revalidation
