Locum Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Job summary

The post-holder will help provide specialist Obstetric and Gynaecology services, including cancer exclusion clinics. They will provide on call support overnight, and on weekends, together with appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students. They will be expected to work closely with general practitioners, gynaecology and oncology staff, midwifery colleagues, allied health professionals, obstetric, anaesthetic and neonatal staff to provide a seamless service and deliver high quality outcomes within national targets.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements

To ensure the provision of a first class service

To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged within the speciality

To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate

To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedure and operating policies

To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Divisions service plans

To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Women and Children's Division or the Trust

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to the patients presenting to the Department

To examine and treat patients within the Department as required by clinical demand

To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff

To provide on call support out of hours. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols

To remain contactable and available when on call / on duty

To carry out regular ward rounds in a timely fashion

About us

Our Womens & Children's Division

The Gynaecology Directorate is part of the Trust's Women and Children's Division. The Chief of Service for Women and Children's Services is Dr Simon Pirie, who also holds clinical commitments as a consultant in Neonatology. The Divisional Operations Director is Becky Hughes and the Divisional Nursing Director is Karen Pudge.

The Gynaecology service is based at Gloucester Royal Hospital, and provides care for women from Gloucestershire. Operating lists are undertaken at both Cheltenham and Gloucester hospital with outpatient clinics being held in the Women's Centre at Gloucestershire Royal, Cheltenham Generaland surrounding community hospitals.

To promote evidence based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments

To be involved in risk management and quality assurance

To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCOG guidelines

To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents

The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes.

Teaching and Research

The Trust has a strong record in Clinical Research in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The post-holder will be encouraged to be active in ongoing clinical research. The Trust has a well-established framework for clinical governance that incorporates the clinical audit program. In addition to the Trust Clinical Governance Committee, there are now well-established procedures at directorate and departmental level for reviewing and implementing action with regard to clinical governance issues.

The health community of Gloucestershire hosts and supports the development of the academy. Initially led by the University of Bristol Medical School and now involving the University of the West of England Faculty of Health and Social Care, the academy will grow to embrace the ambitions of the NHS, University and other organisations that may be relevant to our countys Trusts and employees. Meanwhile, the academy's purpose is to provide an academic infrastructure for students in medicine, nursing and the allied health professions to pursue their respective higher education curriculum within the clinical setting of the primary and secondary care Trusts in Gloucestershire.

Clinical Experience
