Job summary

Do you have, or are working towards, the IBMS ASD in Specimen Dissection? If so, we would like to hear from you.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Scientist to join our friendly Cellular Pathology team based in Cheltenham.

You will be part of the team providing the dissection service and will be working with a wide range of surgical specimens.

We are a recognised training laboratory and you will be leading on the introduction and delivery of new training courses in specimen dissection

Main duties of the job

You must have HCPC registration, MSc or FIBMS or equivalent and demonstrate relevant post HCPC registration experience in cellular pathology, together with the Diploma of Expert Practice in Specimen Dissection

You will be part of an experienced and supportive team, working within the Cellular Pathology Department. You will be dissecting surgical cancer histology specimens from all organ systems.

You will be supporting the training of Biomedical Scientists and junior medical staff in dissection techniques, providing support and advice.

You will be leading the establishment and delivery of dissection training courses.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will, amongst other duties, be required to:

With support from the Consultant Histopathologist team be responsible for the direct delivery of histopathological dissection of category A, B, C, D and E specimens using Royal College of Pathologist data sets, including the macroscopic description of surgically removed specimens

To ensure that the catalogue of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in specimen reception and dissection are comprehensive and relevant and that all SOPs are updated in a timely fashion

Support the Section Lead in the completion and supervision of specimen reception and dissection examination, vertical, and horizontal audits according to the departmental audit schedule, in a timely fashion.

In conjunction with the Section Lead report and investigate non-conformances in the specimen reception and dissection service, including completing and reviewing error logs and subsequent actions.

Support the training of junior doctors and BMS staff in specimen dissection

Co-ordinating the opening of specimens with the clinical team

Participate in the training and teaching of trainee Biomedical Scientists, MLAs and other healthcare professionals, including developing and leading on the delivery of dissection training courses
