Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, proactive registered nurse with experience in Motor Neuron Disease, Neurology and/or Palliative Care to join the Motor Neuron Disease Senior Nurse Neurology at GRH. This is a fixed term 12-month (37.5) Band 7 post to cover maternity leave.

The neurology team based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital provides a patient-centred service to those with acute and chronic neurological illness, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. You will be expected to exercise a high degree of professional autonomy and to make critical judgments using specialist knowledge. You will have responsibility for assessing patients and subsequently devising, implementing and assessing an individual's comprehensive MND care plan.

Post holder will need to possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and is required to work closely with the MND MDT team, consultant neurologists, palliative consultants, palliative care and health colleagues within primary and secondary care, social care and voluntary agencies, contributing to and implementing care for people with MND.

Main duties of the job

The Band 7 Motor Neuron Disease Senior Nurse Neurology will be an expert field of MND working across divisional and organisational boundaries and who holds a highly specialised knowledge and understanding the needs of people living with MND from diagnosis to end of life. They will develop, implement and evaluate a seamless specialist service ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of clinical care and that specialist advice, education and support to health professionals and patients is provided.

The post holder will drive service development, audits and research within the MND service, have highly developed clinical expertise and acumen enabling them to plan, deliver and co-ordinate complex care in routine and non-routine circumstances to ensure that the needs of the person with MND are best served.

As an expert nurse, the post holder will practice autonomously, working independently within their scope of clinical practice and in conjunction with other relevant clinical staff. The post holder will assist with clinical development in maintaining and improving all aspects of clinical governance, evidence-based practice and quality assurance and monitoring within the service and specialty. Uses a range of techniques to ensure, set and monitor standards of clinical practice, audit, research and teaching to continually improve standards of care and patient experience.

The MND Specialist Nurse/ MND Coordinator will work in collaboration with the Consultant Neurologist, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, specialist and the wider Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) to support and coordinate services provided by the MND Service, to assist in the management and care of patients with MND. The CNS will be expected to promote effective integrated working between areas and support the development and improvement of integrated pathways. As a member of the MND MDT the post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of the MND service, participating in new initiatives and implementing change of practice.

The MND Specialist Nurse/ MND Coordinator will help develop protocols, organisational guidelines and pathways of care. Ensuring NICE Guidelines in MND Management and the National Service Framework for Long Term Conditions are followed. This includes following any revisions and updates to the National Guidelines. The post holder will be responsible for Audit work within this role to develop and improve services for patients with MND.

The post holder will drive service development, audits and research within the MND service, have highly developed clinical expertise and acumen enabling them to plan, deliver and co-ordinate complex care in routine and non-routine circumstances to ensure that the needs of the person with MND are best served. The post holder will support the wider MND service by providing operational coordination including maintaining data quality within the MND database, ensuring high standards of MND services and promoting the smooth running of the service.

A background in neurology and/or neurosurgery and/or palliative care is essential. Whilst Motor Neurone Disease Neurology experience is desirable, training, support and development will be provided to the appropriate candidate who can demonstrate the motivation, interest and drive to deliver a high level of specialist intervention and care to patients with MND and those that support them.

The ability to undertake frequent travel to patients homes and community locations across the county outside of GRH and CGH which may not be on a public transport route and will require access to transport to meet the requirements of this role.
