Job summary

This Neurophysiology Practitioner apprenticeship at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an exciting opportunity to learn new skills and become part of the neurophysiology team. The Neurophysiology Service provides a broad range of diagnostic tests and procedures to a wide range of service users of all ages.

This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone with a desire to learn and develop specialist skills with a view to beginning a career in neurophysiology

We are offering the full training and then a permanent role thereafter. The successful candidate will complete the Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner (Physiological Sciences) Degree Apprenticeship. This opportunity gives you the chance to "earn and learn" whilst completing a professionally accredited 3 year course with the University of West of England. The frame work consists of:

Year 1 (Salary: £21,235.20)

Modules include an introduction to physiological sciences, the scientific basis of life and anatomy and physiology

Year 2 (Salary: £23,004.80)

Modules develop a focus on neurophysiology and cover the professional aspects of healthcare science

Year 3 (Salary: £26,544.00)

You will undertake a healthcare science project and study professionalism practice for healthcare science. You will also gain more advanced and in-depth training in neurophysiology.

Main duties of the job

- To attend the University of the West of England and work placements as set out in training programme

- To complete and pass appropriate academic modules to the required breadth and depth of underpinning knowledge

- To gain practical understanding and experience over the whole range of Neurophysiology

-The post holder will undertake work based training in conjunction with the Practitioner Training Programme supported by the Academy of Healthcare Science

- The programme aims to develop competent Practitioners who can practice independently within the neurophysiology department

-The post holder will, over the course of 3 years complete an undergraduate degree level course in BSc Healthcare Science - Neurophysiology.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To study and gain formal qualification in BSc Healthcare Science neurophysiology through the Healthcare Science Practitioner Training Programme

The post holder will carry out work based learning in the department under the supervision of a workplace supervisor whilst also attending academic sessions as prescribed by the academic institute

Conduct safe working practices applying risk management and health and safety principles

Produce risk assessments

Work safely specifically with regard to radioactive, biological and chemical hazards in accordance with current legislation

Produce and review incident reports

Perform equipment management procedures

Operate quality management systems

Carry out audit to continuously improve patient care and service needs.

Use computer systems and software appropriate to their work

Operate medical equipment, performing calibration, equipment quality assurance and equipment quality control

Perform quality control procedures and review and interpret quality control results

Maintain appropriate records

Communicate effectively with stakeholders

Undertake all mandatory training

Maintains a professional and courteous attitude

Operate in accordance with Good Scientific Practice

Perform and interpret routine neurophysiology investigations including but not limited to: Electroencephalography, ambulatory monitor fitting and analysis, evoked potentials, Nerve conduction Studies

(This will be supervised by a senior member of staff as appropriate for the test)

Perform the above procedures and investigations to the level of competence and under the supervision of senior members of staff as appropriate within the outpatients department and wards.

Preparation of equipment and procedure rooms. This will include restocking of all consumables as necessary, in order to perform the appropriate test

Preparation and reassurance of patients undergoing any Test as appropriate for skill level

Working on wards, critical care, or any of the other clinical rooms within the department.

Assisting during Cardiac Arrest and other life threatening events. (This can be as simple as alerting others or as complex as defibrillation. This is unpredictable but usually occurs frequently)

Observe and assess the patient mental and physical health at all times. This could be the patient clinical state.
