Job purpose
To provide high quality clinical care and through the effective management and professional leadership of the clinical Theatres team, in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council/Health Care Professions Council and Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust
To be managerially and professionally accountable for the effective delivery of Risk and Goverance management in all theatres and external services.
Providing visible, accessible and authoritative leadership to staff and acting as an expert role model to ensure the excellence and effectiveness of all clinical/surgical practice while maintaining a clinical presence within the theatres as required
To create and support a safe environment which facilitates innovative approaches to patient care and nursing practice in order to improve the quality of care given.
To inspire, motivate and empower others to ensure highly specialised clinical competence and standards are developed and maintained
To take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of or as delegated by the Matrons or Deputy Matrons across all sites.
To assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of practitioners within theatres

To report all incidents/adverse events in a timely manner in accordance with Trust policy
Take responsibility for ensuring staff check, set up and safely use of all medical devices/equipment used on patients and that there are robust systems in place to take the appropriate action/reporting process in the event of faulty devices and equipment
Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, while providing full support of the patient and their needs and staff as required
To ensure all record keeping is legible, accurate and contemporaneous and in accordance with Trust policy and departmental procedure
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
Experience of deputising for senior department staff
Evidence of delegation and personal time management skills
Able to demonstrate expert competence in a surgical environment with highly developed specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience
Possess a high level of awareness and understanding of contemporary issues in Risk/ Goverance and in the wider health and nursing environment, with evidence of continuing professional development
Evidence of teaching and assessing experience and an appropriate qualification with a commitment to the ongoing development of all team staff and nursing services provided
Experience of motivating staff and team building, with proven analytical skills and staff development through appraisal and performance management
Developed/Enhanced IT skills
Experience as a lead resource for disseminating clinical skills and knowledge
Understanding and experience of implementing research based practice
Recognised management course or equivalent level of competence gained through experience
Effective communication, interpersonal, organisational and planning skills
To maintain highly specialised levels of competence
Key Result Areas
Support the clinical area, ensuring protocols, policies and procedures are adhered to and provide a service to the agreed standard which meets organizational and national targets
Participate in audit and research to develop research based practices
Communicate effectively throughout the multidisciplinary team disseminating contentious and delicate information appropriately and in a timely manner
Ensure safe care is provided within a challenging and changing clinical environment, supporting staff using equipment and resources and staff safely and as appropriate, leading the co-ordination of the many contributions that are necessary to deliver the totality of seamless, high quality care
Work collaboratively with the Practice Development Team to provide clinical environments that are conducive to learning and provide high quality care delivery.
Analyse difficult situations ensuring staff and patients safety under the 1974 Health and Safety Act
Undertake judgements involving highly complex facts or situations requiring analysis, interpretation and comparisons of a range of options
Ensure own and staffs ability to input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer based systems. Ensure maintenance of accurate and contemporaneous patient records
Manage pay and non-pay budgets for the clinical area seeking the support of the Matron as required
Support with the ordering of equipment within the agreed budgetary limit
Participate in the review of establishments and skill mix, ensuring that they are appropriate to current clinical demands and case mix
Ensure a standardised approach to training, disciplinary and performance issues is taken and be active in recruitment, retention and performance issues
Help to develop and maintain effective management systems which ensure nursing staff are recruited, retained, inducted and deployed effectively with appropriate training to carry out their roles
Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters
In conjunction with their manager, identify training needs of self, participating in clinical audit and quality projects which contribute to the departmental education programme
Report incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist in the investigation of incidents as required
Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with senior management
Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and ensure the professionalism of its staff is portrayed
Contribute to the development and achievement of the Trusts corporate agenda and to the development, implementation and evaluation of Trust wide policies and procedures, ensuring staff have access to them and work within a safe and robust framework. Implement policies within the theatres and propose policy or service changes which impact beyond their own area of activity
Contribute to audit programmes for the improvement of the quality of care. Assist in the development of the use of research, maintaining a system whereby all staff have the ability to critically appraise literature and transfer findings into practice. Encourage the development of a supportive infrastructure at clinical level for nursing research and development, promoting dissemination of and participation in nursing research
Assist in leading the contribution for theatres, developing Trust objectives and business plans including the implementation and achievement of these. Assist in planning and organising a broad range of complex activities and programmes, some of which are on-going, which require the formulation and adjustment of plans or strategies.
Co-ordinate the collection and analysis of nursing service information enabling the Division and Trust to plan, monitor and achieve its objectives

To act as a positive role model at all times, deputising for the Matron/Senior Matron as required
