Job summary
This is an obstetrics and gynaecology registrar level role for a doctor keen to obtain CESR and already progressing towards that achievement. The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at GHNHSFT has an excellent track record of supporting non-training grade doctors to achieve CESR and subsequently consultant posts.
There will be opportunities to complete ATSMs in the successful candidate's area of interest and the candidate will be encouraged to participate in teaching, quality improvement and their own professional development.
This post would suit a doctor who has completed the MTI programme successfully and has their MRCOG. This is a 12-month contract with a mid-point review as to whether this will be extended further.
The post will be based mainly at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital/Cheltenham General Hospital some clinical commitments will also take place at some community sites.
The contract for this post will be held by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT).

- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans
- To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in these specialties
- To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate

About us
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Directorate is part of the Trust's Women and Children's Division. The Chief of Service is Dr Simon Pirie, who also holds clinical commitments as a consultant in Neonatology and Paediatrics. The Director of Midwifery is Lisa Stephens and the Divisional Director of Quality & Nursing is Karen Pudge. Divisional Director is Becky Hughes.
The obstetric led delivery suite is in the Women's Centre at Gloucester Royal Hospital and has a level 2 neonatal unit and two obstetric theatres. There is a co-located Midwifery Led Unit (MLU) and a two standalone MLU in Cheltenham and Stroud. Antenatal clinics are held across the county and there are specialist clinics for fetal medicine, maternal medicine, perinatal mental health and vulnerable women.
There is a busy benign and acute gynaecology service based at Gloucester Royal Hospital, with daily early pregnancy clinics and emergency gynaecology clinics. There are specialist services for Uro-gynaecology and Fertility, and specialist clinics for recurrent miscarriage, operative and diagnostic hysteroscopy and pelvic pain.Gynaecological oncology is based at Cheltenham General Hospital and has regular 2ww, oncology and colposcopy clinics. There are four full day operating lists a week, including a robot list.

Teaching and Training
The post holder would be expected to contribute to the post-graduate education for all grades of medical staff and nursing staff at regular Friday afternoon teaching.
There is a strong link with undergraduate teaching through the University of Bristol medical Academy. This currently involves delivery of several tutorial based sessions throughout the year the post holder will be expected to contribute to these sessions.
Research
The post holder will be encouraged to be active in Clinical Research. The Trust and Cranfield University have a longstanding collaboration and have formed the Cranfield Post Graduate Medical School in Gloucestershire.
Clinical Governance & Audit
The Trust has an established framework for Clinical Governance that incorporates a Clinical Audit programme. In addition to the Trust Clinical Governance committee there are procedures at Directorate and Department level for reviewing and implementing action with regard to Clinical Governance issues. There is also a strong drive for Quality Improvement initiatives led from the Gloucestershire Safety & Quality Improvement Academy which was established in June 2015.
The Trust has been widely praised for its approach to Quality Improvement and was rated outstanding at our recent CQC inspection. The Trust as a whole was also elevated to GOOD overall with over 90% of services good or outstanding.
The department is actively engaged in audit and there is an internal audit programme. There is also involvement in clinical audit and the appointee will be expected to take part in the development of Clinical Audit activities and in achieving Clinical Governance objectives in accordance with the agreed Departmental, Directorate and Trust governance programmes, including re-validation. These build on the considerable progress that has already been made by the Trust in Clinical Audit and there is continuous quality improvement.
