Job summary

We are looking to appoint a suitably experienced Clinical Fellow to work in the Oncology Department at Cheltenham General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a committed and supportive team looking after oncology patients. Involving mainly outpatient work, the post will involve reviewing patients during and after treatment, with appropriate training given to undertake chemotherapy assessment and prescribing.

The post will also involve ward work, covering the oncology and haematology inpatient unit, comprising 2 dedicated oncology and haematology wards (40 beds) and the Acute Haematology and Oncology Unit. There could be an opportunity to be further involved in the management of inpatients and acute referrals if desired.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE ONCOLOGY SERVICES

The Gloucestershire Oncology Centre is located on the Cheltenham General Hospital site and provides sub-regional cancer services for a catchment population of more than 1.1 million people living in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and parts of Shropshire and Powys.

Services are provided across Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust at its Cancer Centre on the Cheltenham hospital site and also in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where outpatient clinics are held and outpatient haemato-oncology clinics and treatments are given in the Edward Jenner Unit.

In addition, there is an affiliated cancer unit in Hereford. As well as services within the Oncology Centre, and affiliated Units, non-surgical oncology services are provided in Stroud, Dursley, Cirencester, Lydney and Tewkesbury and Moreton. These include new patient and follow-up clinics, joint clinics and meetings. Consultants and some specialty grade staff have sessional commitments to these.

This post is ideally suited to a candidate considering a career in Oncology, post Foundation training:

  • Experience will be gained in the management of common malignancies, including chemotherapy assessment. There will also be opportunities to be gain experience in radiotherapy.
  • Depending on the interests of the successful applicant, support will be given to pursue an interest in Medical Education or a Quality Improvement Project. The department has a good record of such projects being successful with presentations or posters nationally.
  • he post holder will join a highly supportive team, including 8 Speciality Doctors and 6 SpRs. SpR training has been rated Excellent in Cheltenham for many years. This post is not a training post, but clinical experience and supervision will be similar to junior SpRs.
  • here is an active clinical research programme, with opportunities to be involved with trial recruitment.

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. Completion of F1/F2.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice

  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job.
  • Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice)
  • Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English
  • Applicants have scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent equal to those required for recruitment to MMC specialty training programmes.
