This job is now closed

Job summary

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and ambitious colleague to work within our exciting, ever-expanding Paediatric Department, supporting the Paediatric department as well as Paediatric Cardiology Service.

This substantive post has become available due to the retirement of one of the two Paediatric Consultants with Cardiology expertise.

The post holder will support paediatric cardiology work and some general paediatric emergency and elective work too, including outpatient clinics.

Successful applicants will have a job plan that includes general Paediatric service weeks, on calls out of hours and during weekends in addition to outpatient clinics. We have separate general paediatric and neonatal rotas across all three tiers and you are not expected to contribute towards the Neonatal on call rota. This post comes with 1.5 core SPA time, which is equivalent to those of other Consultants within the Department.

You will be encouraged to take on a leadership role in education/risk/service development should you wish to do so, usually by increasing the proportion of SPAs.

If you think this post may be for you, we would love to meet or talk to you. This post may also be suitable for someone wishing to work less than full time.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide acute and outpatient services in Paediatrics including cardiology. They will also participate in the general paediatric rota.

  • To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service

  • To share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to patients presenting to the Paediatric unit.
  • To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff and specialist diabetes and endocrine nurses
  • To provide on-call support for Paediatrics and to attend the Department out-of-hours as per agreed protocols; to remain contactable and available when on-call.
  • To provide for as long as it is required, an outpatient service at a peripheral hospital in the county

About us

You will be joining a strong team of clinicians committed to the delivery of excellent general paediatric and subspecialty services. The department is made up of Acute Paediatrics, Neurodisability and Neonatology. It is very well integrated with a great deal of joint working around complex clinical cases as well as on training, teaching undergraduates, research and clinical governance. Support and supervision for safeguarding is available, with a safeguarding rota Monday to Friday.

Paediatric Cardiology at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

The current service is supported by the visiting paediatric cardiologist Dr Eva Kapravelou. On average there are 24 MDT clinics per year- so roughly twice per month given the large paediatric population of Gloucestershire and the surrounding area.

These Consultant's support the PEC team of two consultants. At present, we have one PEC who is a Neonatologist (who has retired and returned) and one who is a General Paediatrician. Given the high frequency of Cardiologist non-urgent cases are discussed when they attend. Imaging can easily be IEP'ed through to Bristol for more urgent discussions for which there is a close working relationship with all of the Cardiologists in Bristol and indeed the South West Network.
