Job summary

Technician, Band 3- Medical Day Unit (Monday to Saturday service)

The post holder under supervision will work with the Nursing Team on the Medical Day Unit undertaking aspects of care within the competencies they have attained through formal and informal education and training.

Medical day unit service is a Nurse Lead Unit provided with 12 chair capacity in Cheltenham general hospital

The Matron for Medical Day Unit is Vinod Mani. Unit manager is Bijimol Joseph, The General Manager is Adele Pugh and Jo Knickenberg is the Assistant General Manager.

Within the role of a Technician, the post holder is required to:

- Deliver high quality, compassionate care and deliver this safely within a challenging and changing environment, using resources as equipment as appropriate

- Have capable attitudes and behaviours compatible with GHNHSFT and the NHS values

- To assist with the assessment of patients with the support of a Qualified Nurse or Nurse Practitioner

- May supervise colleagues, assisting in the assessment and attainment of their learning and developmental needs

- To carry out their tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competence

Main duties of the job

- Carry out tasks as delegated by the Registered Nurses, working strictly within the competencies as stipulated by the Trust; including:

Cannulation

Venepuncture

ECG recording

- Carry out blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration and escalating concerns to Registered Nurses

Communications and Working Relationships

- Ensure accurate and legible records are maintained in relation to care being delivered

- Ensure ability to maintain electronic records, and be aware of the need to protect access

- Report any information received by the patient, carers regarding patient care

- Communicate with individuals, carers and other visitors in a helpful manner

Physical, Mental and Emotional effort and working conditions

- The unit is busy and very spaced out, so the work can be tiring

- Computers are used on the unit frequently

- The Liver Specialist Service is also based on the unit, and as a result some of these patients are quite poorly with life limiting conditions

- To work as a member of the team and contribute to the effective running of the clinical area

- To work a shift pattern this is determined by service requirement, but also conforms to the European Working Time Directive
