Job summary
This post holder will be working as part of the Oncology middle grade team based at Cheltenham General Hospital and also covering Hereford County Hospital. This post includes providing care to patients with cancer including those in clinical trials. The post will include supervising and prescribing systemic treatment including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. There will be opportunity to see new patients and those on follow up. The majority of the post will cover outpatients however there will also be opportunity for acute and inpatient work. 1PA of SPA will be included in job plan and study leave will be available as per trust policy. This post offers excellent experience and opportunity to Oncologists seeking to gain experience prior to a Specialist Doctor or Consultant post.
Main duties of the job
This is an exciting opportunity to join an excellent regional cancer centre. The post holder will be working with our team of 17 Clinical and Medical Consultant Oncologists, 2 Specialist Doctors, 5 SAS doctors, Junior Clinical Fellows and 8 Registrars. It will provide excellent Oncology experience and plentiful educational opportunities for the post-holder, who will be encouraged to participate in clinical trials within the department and to take part in a quality improvement project. This is an excellent opportunity for those pursuing a career in Oncology who are looking to gain experience prior to applying for Specialist Doctor or Consultant posts. The post is for 6 months in the first instance, but likely to be extended, depending on the candidate. Candidates should have minimum of 3 years' experience in Oncology.
About us
Oncology is within the Service Line of Oncology, Clinical Haematology and Palliative Care in the Diagnostics and Specialties Division (D&S) of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Alex D'Agapeyeff is Chief of Service for D&S. Our trust prides itself on delivering the best care for everyone. We provide a wide range of specialist hospital services from our two main sites at Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals. Gloucestershire Oncology Centre is located on the Cheltenham General Hospital site and provides cancer services for a population of more than 1.1 million people living in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and parts of Shropshire and Powys. Radiotherapy is provided at Cheltenham General Hospital with a satellite unit at Hereford County Hospital. Systemic treatment is delivered at Cheltenham and Hereford and also from our mobile chemotherapy unit which travels to 4 community hospital sites each week. There are 40 dedicated beds in our Centre accepting both Oncology and malignant haematology patients. A dedicated and staffed space is provided within the Centre for the care of those suffering acute side effects of treatment and disease, which is accessed directly by patients. The Centre currently registers more than 4000 new patients per year.
