Job summary
We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic nurse practitioner who would like to make a difference to patient care and the ophthalmology services patients can access. This is an exciting opportunity for a registered nurse to enhance their leadership skills and current ophthalmology knowledge base in the treatment and management of patients with a wide range of eye health conditions. Main duties of the job
Gloucestershire Eye Unit offers a comprehensive ophthalmic service for adults and children and your role will be part of this go-ahead multi-disciplinary service. You will work with the Nurse Practitioner team to provide a telephone triage service and work closely with the medical retinal team performing angiography, photodynamic therapy and intravitreal injections. Once competent you will work autonomously administering Botulinum Toxin injections for blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm and entropion.
This is a full-time post which will be rostered into our team working hours between 8.00-1800 Monday to Saturday. You will be expected to be flexible to meet the needs of the service and will sometimes be required to cross sites at Cheltenham General and Gloucester Royal hospitals on the same day.

The nurse practitioners are trained to triage telephone referrals from GPs, Emergency Departments, Minor Injury Units, optometrists and self-referring patients. Once competent in the above skills, there may be an opportunity for further development and training to undertake additional ophthalmic procedures in response to service developments such as Emergency Eye Care Clinic and slit lamp skills.
The nurse practitioners need to communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team including community agencies involved in supporting patients with sight loss. To maintain and develop high standards of care and to conduct oneself in a professional manner and be a role model to less experienced/non registered and new staff at all times.
The nurse practitioner team contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and review of audits/ standards/ policies/ guidelines and service improvements for the Ophthalmology Service informing and collaborating with other colleagues as appropriate.
