Trauma & Orthopaedics consist of Trauma based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Elective Orthopaedics based at Cheltenham General Hospital.
Our specialist Trauma Unit (Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site) consists of two inpatient units caring for patients following traumatic injuries, a specialist Spinal Unit and a specialist Trauma Assessment & Treatment Unit (TATU).
These are as follows
- A stand-alone 8 bedded spinal elective unit (ward 2a Spinal Annexe)
- An acute complex Trauma ward consisting of 29 beds (ward 3b) plus an 8 chair Trauma Assessment & Treatment Unit (TATU)
- A 30 bedded ward dealing with traumatic fractured neck of femur injuries, of which we are the 4th largest in the UK (Gloucestershire Hip Fracture Unit)
Our Trauma service is one of the busiest in the South West. In order to deal with the growing demands of this service we have developed and sustain, a truly multidisciplinary approach which includes consultants in orthogeriatrics working alongside those in trauma and orthopaedics as well as our dedicated nurse specialists. We have a strong emphasis on patient safety and quality and strive to consistently achieve high standards of care for our patients.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of this post are:
- Work with the 3b Ward Manager to ensure that the nursing team works flexibly and supportively together, and that the performance indicators for the area are delivered.
- Deputise for the 3b Ward Manager in his/her absence to ensure that there is planned, effective, day-to-day skill mix and staff management.
- Demonstrate excellent personal communication. Establish and maintain effective two-way communication channels with individuals and groups. Demonstrate appropriate assertiveness and ability to challenge others when the rights of patients and others may be infringed.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and ability to problem solve. Promote excellent team working and interdisciplinary relationships.
- Allocate work and assess performance of the team members objectively against set criteria/ competencies. Work with Ward Sister/Charge Nurse/Senior Staff Nurses to ensure that staff appraisals are undertaken. Assist with action plans arising from these appraisals as necessary. Provide clear feedback to team members in a way that is conducive to maintaining and improving performance.
- Work with 3b Ward Manager to effectively manage the allocated financial resources within the allocated budgets.
- Actively promote and audit robust infection control practices. Assist the 3b Ward Manager to maintain high standards of cleanliness in the clinical area and for a well-maintained clinical environment.

- Actively take the lead in Clinical Governance to maintain and improve standards of patient care, safety and quality. Work as a role model in placing the patients experience at the core of service delivery. Assist in the monitoring and audit the quality of care through a range of strategies, including risk management incident reporting, complaints, research and effectiveness monitoring and clinical audit. Ensure own actions promote quality and alert others to quality issues.
