Job summary

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic nurse who would like to make a difference to both patient care and staff career progression.

This is an exciting opportunity for a registered Dental Nurse to enhance their leadership skills and assist the unit manager on the everyday management of patients and staff in the outpatient department.

The lead Dental nurse would be part of a multi-disciplinary team and would assist clinicians and other members of the multi-disciplinary team with the oral, maxillofacial and orthodontic care and treatment of patients. The post holder will work alongside and under supervision of a consultant and other appropriately qualified clinicians.

The lead Dental Nurse role will include chairside activity as well as supporting the Senior sister, and ensuring that new and junior staff are effectively inducted and supported by all the team members, as well as ensuring and maintaining an environment that is conductive to staff development.

Main duties of the job

Plan ahead by weekly rota checks/timetabling against clinics running, amend staff accordingly whilst liaising with the management team.

Assist with sickness and absence management by recording all absences which occur in the absence of the sister and communicate accordingly.

Development of an educational programme for Dental Nurses.

Work in clinics supporting more junior members of the team.

Responsible for checking, ordering and maintaining stock levels of equipment as required.

Supervise and monitor standards of care delivery in the department, check the environment for safety and cleanliness

Ensure daily checks on clinical areas are carried out, and weekly tasks are completed.

Carry out departmental inductions for all new staff of varying grades.

Carry out any other relevant duties as specified by the professional staff and senior sister.

Supervise and identify staff who require additional training within the department.

Develop and empower all members of staff to perform high standards and innovate.

Assist in departmental audits and implementation of outcomes where appropriate.

Attend relevant departmental and trust meetings and disseminate the information.

Assist with the recruitment and selection of new nursing staff.

Actively participate in annual appraisals, and agreeing personal development plans

Liaise with the hospital laboratories to ensure the availability of laboratory and technical work for clinics

About us

We have 19 Registered Dental Nurses, 3 Registered Nurses, 1 registered nursing associate, 2 Orthodontic therapists, 2 Healthcare Assistants and Admin support who work in a friendly but very busy outpatient's department. The oral and maxillofacial surgery and orthodontics department work alongside varies multidisciplinary teams which cover a variety of head and neck procedures.

We also have Specialist trainee registrars and Dental Core Trainees in the department as we have a strong training ethos.

This is a cross-site specialty with all staff required to work at both Cheltenham General Hospital & Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Free transport is provided for trust staff by shuttle-bus between the two sites.

Job purpose

The post holder is responsible for cleaning and maintaining a safe working environment using measures to reduce cross infection as per Trust policy.Communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team, giving advice and information following procedures under supervision, potentially relating to specialist conditions, including emotionally distressing situations.

To organise and provide chair-side nursing in orthodontic and oral surgery clinics.

To act as a scrub nurse and assist with procedures under local anaesthetic, lasting up to an hour.

To organise, prepare and assist with specialist clinics eg. orthognatic, oncology, alveolar, cleft lip and palate.

To provide care, under supervision for patients with appearance altering conditions such as Cleft palate, facial cancers and facial trauma.

To prepare medical and orthodontic notes for clinics including obtaining investigation results from computerised systems eg MRI and CAT scans.

Obtaining prostheses from the maxilla-facial laboratory.

Responsible for recording and storage of patient study models of patients currently undergoing treatment

Work on either site as the workload demands and on the instruction of the nurse in charge. Take on responsibility for personal development and support the development and supervision of others by developing and maintaining specialist knowledge of Therapy practice

Conduct oneself in a professional manner and be a role model to less experience/ non registered and new staff at all times

Work proactively to ensure that every patient attendance meets the patients expectations and needs with timely undertaking of procedure and effective communication with relatives, patients and carers.

To assist the team in the day to day running of the clinical area.

Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, supporting the patient, family and other staff as required.

Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times

Professional practice

Ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer reviewed best practice

Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to deliver and evidence based service.

With supervision and assistance take on increased responsibility recognising own limitations and seeking help appropriately

Be competent in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including the use of electronic patient record, email, and PACS.

Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust

Adhere to the GDC code of practice at all times and operate within the GDC scope of professional practice.

Leadership and management
