Job summary
To strategically lead the cross site Critical Care and Pain services, alongside the General Manager and Specialty Director
To lead the nursing, administrative, clerical and technical teams within Critical Care in an engaged, collaborative, cohesive, pro-active and progressive manner to maintain excellent standards of patient care and service delivery.
To lead the acute and chronic specialist pain nurses who deliver expert patient care and management within in-patient and outpatient services.
To deliver and role model effective, transformational leadership and operational decision making within Critical Care and Pain services.
To work in manner that promotes kind and compassionate leadership and on-going professional development of self and others
To work collaboratively with the senior teams for all services outlined to drive patient safety and quality forwards through the development and implementation of service and quality improvement projects.
To be an active member of the surgical divisional and trust wide senior team, supporting and leading on operational and quality initiatives and improvements as appropriate
To be an active and engaged member of the South-West Critical Care Network lead group
Main duties of the job
To be responsible and accountable for the effective delivery of nursing services within the Critical Care and Pain services.
To strategically and operationally lead the Critical Care and Pain Services alongside the service line 'tri', lead consultant and senior nursing team
To take the strategic, professional nursing lead to ensure the safe and effective delivery of care for patients, within the defined clinical services, ensuring responsiveness to the changing needs of the services and nursing teams
To lead and work collaboratively with the Band 7 Critical Care Ward Managers, Clinical Nurse Educators and Specialist Nurses and wider teams to determine and deliver on strategic objectives and to promote the overarching vision for the services
To work collaboratively and cohesively with the entire Critical Care inter-professional team to meet the needs of critically ill patients and their families
To maintain high visibility and clinical expertise, role modelling high standards of care, evidence-based practice and effective leadership within UK law, NMC and Trust policies and guidelines
To take the nursing lead within clinical governance and quality framework, helping to embed the culture of continuous improvement in line with Division, Trust and national direction and priorities
Provide assurance to the Divisional Director of Quality and Nursing that there is continuous improvement in the delivery of care, ensuring that it is safe, effective and responsive to

The Department of Critical Care is a cross site service with two units one at Gloucestershire royal hospital (19 beds) and Cheltenham General Hospital (12 beds). The Critical Care team is made up of a dynamic MDT team who offer exceptional high standards of care to it patients and relatives. We have a compassionate leadership team who have a flat hierarchy and shared decision making model. The team is a flexible workforce working on both Critical Care sites. The delivery of quality and safety to our staff and patients is a key priority of the service.
